What (if anything) are you using to stereo-ize yer Prophets?

I spent the first few weeks with my Prophet 5 running it through nothing at all, and being perfectly satisfied. Its sound really needs nothing. But I've read these replies with interest.

I currently do not own a dedicated effects unit, so I started running my Prophet 5 through my Pro 3's effects, and that's a lot of fun. If you try this, make sure to set the input level down to about 30%, to avoid clipping with five notes. You may need to go lower if you have a Prophet 10, but I wouldn't know.

It was enough to get me thinking about getting a good external processor.

Aside from that, I have recorded a pad part with two passes, each one panned to one side. Both passes used the same Prophet 5 sound, but I switched from the Curtis filter to the Rossum filter on the second pass.

In a fit of "keeping it real," I've been looking at old Effectron delays. Had one in my teenage days and loved it. Might be a nice unit to keep the P5 plugged into, in all mono glory! I've mostly stopped thinking about stereo options for the P5, other than via software. The 5 has such heft to its sound and in mono, it fills plenty of space...

I am using Eventide H9 "Carnegie Hall" program mostly with factory preset 213 with slightly extended release tail.  It sounds SO GOOD.  I play Bach WTC whole book in one sitting hours and hours just to enjoy the beauty of it.  The sound is stereo-ish, or perhaps stereo.

I guess I wasn't kidding - I went ahead and grabbed an Effectron in great shape. The Prophet sounds perfect through it. And so very mono!

2 outputs from 1 preamp into 2 interfaces, panning the main interface in left, and the 2nd middle right.  It's always got a moderate amount of chorus because the 2 interfaces into the DAW, one is carried via ADAT to the other.  So yeah even with no fx at all.  Very cool chorus almost exact sounds, with a minute difference in timing and panning.

P5 mono > UAFX Astra stereo > UAFX Starlight stereo > UAFX Golden stereo > mixer
All pedals in true bypass-mode so that the signal remains untouched if I chose to not engage the effects

In the studio I go directly into a mono-strip and double-track if I want stereo

I use this same trifecta of UAFX pedals with my Prophet 10 and it’s glorious!

I'm developing an expansion board specifically designed for the Rev4 Prophets with 10 panpots on it, which is in the final stage of production. It duplicates the existing mixer and output circuitry (same chips) and produces L and R stereo line output and a stereo headphone output. The existing 1/4" stereo headphone jack on the back of the synth is repurposed to be the stereo line-level output. (Again, there is a new stereo headphone output on a 3.5mm jack to replace it.) The existing mono line-level output is unchanged and can be used in conjunction with the stereo output if desired. No traces are cut and no components are removed on any of the existing circuit boards, so the modification is completely reversible if desired. (The existing stereo headphone jack is rotated 180 degrees, but remains attached to the main board.) Photos of my Rev4 and details to come.
That sounds fantastic of a design. Seems to give a person many options for the Rev 4

Do you have any idea yet to what your price might be?

This is another way to go, with hardware mod:

This was really lovely. I can't see myself ever making the effort - I'm happy to have my P5 singing in glorious mono most of the time - but I really enjoyed watching the video!

I took a tip from the Japanese Synth Guru: Katsunori Ujiie on the MusicTrackJP Channel on Youtube and got a TC Electronic Stereo Chorus. It's an analog pedal for electric guitars but they are absolutely glorious with the P5/10.

Did you get one of the TC Electronics SCF re-issues? and if so, don't you have clipping/headroom issues with it?
I am very interested in the TC Stereo Chorus (the only thing I would buy from the ImBehrium)

Clipping issues stem from line level vs instrument level. A quick fix to this is to reduce the volume on your Prophet. If this quick fix leads to a weak signal or too much noise, get yourself a Radial Engineering StageBug 6. It has a -15db pad (so you can increase the volume on your Prophet) and it will adjust automatically for impedance.

It's always a little ironic to me that the Prophet 5 section of the Sequential forum is often quite quiet, so I'm happy when I have some noise to contribute.

I posted here previously about running my P5 into an Effectron II. I've had the 5 running into that delay since I grabbed the latter. A heavenly pairing. Not stereo. I've said the Prophet 5 has such a full and present sound that effects or stereo-output are never anywhere near the front of my mind. Anyway, I plugged my wife's rev 3 in yesterday, to make sure it's still alive. Oh, it sounds wonderful, even with its various elf-breaking j-wires. I was walking back and forth across my studio, trying to match patches on her rev 3 and my rev 4. the rev 3 is running through an old Boss BX-800 while my new 5 runs through a Tascam Model 12. I'd never plugged mine into the Boss until I did, and yeah... THAT'S a sound. I've got the Boss set so that the P5 barely touches the red clipping indicators. Fuzzy, fat and warm - all the best synth terms, no?

I'm sure I'll soon plug back into the Tascam, but for now...

Here below a few other pedals that can be used to stereo-ize the Prophet:

* Strymon Deco V2, which is practically a no-brainer with its live double-tracking and tape saturation. Up to two delays, as well ad a kind of chorus or flanger are also possible. Set to Line Level, Mono Input, and Wide Stereo Mode.

* Chase Bliss Audio Onward, with the MISO and (stereo) Spread dip switches set. Much less straight-forward than the bread-and-butter Deco, it produces creative and erratic modulation & echo effects, while also allowing for droning if that’s your thing.

I'm running the Prophet-10 into an Eventide MicroPitch Delay, which has a subtle/neutral widening effect without sounding like a chorus. On some sounds I wish it could go even wider, but that would require hard-panning individual tones.

On a side note, I've found the Genzler re/Q to be great at taming the low end of the Prophet before running it through effects. It's basically an EQ pedal for bass players, to keep their instruments from dominating the mix. It also has a high pass and a low pass filter.

I just use Boss RV-500; it complements P-5/10's acoustic quality nicely. Output goes to keyboard amp and then to audio interface.

Replying to myself I know.. sorry, but I only used to do that.  After much difficult trying, I didn't ever manage to fix a glitch that was happening for some reason someplace in my audio chain that caused volume to drop out sometimes in one side or the other.  Never found the problem so I just did away with that old way.

Now I just run the prophet into 2 separate tracks from the same input.  From there I may do either track differently and maybe not keep the Prophet at center in a mix.

I would think this would work better with bells and things.  Similar to what you would get from a PPG.  That synth had that.  Still though it's pretty good work.  I used to do that kind of thing with MIDI lines.  Took forever on my old one core computer.  Only way to do it though.

The benefit, except the stereo spread itself, is that will be no phase issues. Stacking sounds and pan out is the other way to be sure there are no phase issues. All other processing to spread the sound will give phase issues of different magnitude.

Go to https://www.technologyroom.net and scroll towards the bottom of the page. There you will find an installation / overview document and sound samples. There is also an email address for correspondence.

Disclaimer: Sequential has stated both on the GS forum and to me personally, that they will not provide support or repairs on any unit that has been modified in a manner not explicitly prescribed by them (which this mod most definitely does). The reason given is that they are too small of a company to be able to support user-modified equipment.

Regards -- Randy

TechnoRoom, how can I get updates regarding your pan mod board?

I can wholeheartedly vouch for and recommend this mod if anyone is considering it.  Randy is a consummate professional and excellent communicator, this mod is well-designed, and his work to implement and install it is top-flite (saying this as someone who could have performed the installation of this mod myself).  My Prophet 10 desktop is sounding better than ever (IMHO) and I am a happy camper!

Thanks!
