Editing the patch name, directly with the synth controls?

I just acquired a lightly used Mopho Desktop, updated the OS to 1.4 and started reading through the manual - v1.2 appears to be the latest.  I also read the 1.4 addendum.

According to the manual, I can edit the patch name directly on the synth using the knobs and buttons, but the details are not well explained.

Is this true?  If so, how do I do it?  I can't see any way to do it other than with the softtware (I've only tried the SoundTower LE one, so far).

The manual says this (on page 25), in the Program Parameters section:

Name Parameter
Edit Name The lower LCD line displays the name of the Program with the
active character blinking. When ASSIGN PARAMETERS is lit, the parameter
control changes the position of the active character. When ASSIGN PARAMETERS
is not lit, the parameter control steps through all the available characters for the
active character. The increment and decrement buttons also change the

How?  I don't see any way to choose the Name parameter, using the controls on the synth.  Am I missing something?

However, it also says this (on page 15), which appears to be incorrect:

Program Parameters
All Program parameters can be edited using any of the ASSIGNABLE
PARAMETERS controls. To assign a parameter to a control, press the ASSIGN
PARAMETERS button to light the LED, and then turn any of the knobs (1 through
4) to select a parameter. A full list of the parameters can be found on page 29.

- that implied to me that I could assign ANY program parameter to one of the four knobs, but I can't.  I can only assign a subset of them.

Is the manual riddled with mistakes and inconsistencies, or am I just failing to understand some of it?  It's not in my nature to read entire manuals so finding that parts of what I'm reading don't seem to be true is really off putting.
