How is linear FM accessed and used?

I admit it, I am not that knowledgeable about FM synthesis, but I'd like to be. I have updated to 1.4.1 so my P12 is capable of linear FM. Can anyone explain how I access and use the linear FM and what to expect?

Also, when is AM synthesis useful? It never seems to do much at all but I'm sure I am not using it properly.
