Prophet control panel

Prophet control panel

I'm very new to Prophet, I've had it about a week, totally in love.  I don't always have the synth at the desk I am sitting so I wanted some way to remotely control it from across the room so I built this little program to help.

https://tonygermaneri.github.io/prophet-panel/

I also wanted to really see what I was building in the synth and my existing analysis tools were not doing it for me so I built this:

https://tonygermaneri.github.io/waveshape/

It has a ton of fun features and allows you to really see what you're building.

These are built for myself but I thought I would share them with other Prophet owners so I hope you enjoy them.

This looks pretty cool. Thanks for the effort. IŽll have to try this.

Can you save the Edit Buffer ?

That does seem like an obvious omission.  I've added the "save the panel to a file" feature and pushed it out, refreshing the page/PWA should show the new feature.

Looks like a CTRLR panel.  Not sure what the 2nd link does looks like it won't work with my current ESR version of Firefox.  You can run this in CTRLR as a panel?  Or what?

Very good looking panel, but would be more useful to me personally as a CTRLR panel file: https://github.com/damiensellier/CtrlrX/releases/tag/v5.6.35  (Link to windows download of new version forked from original: https://github.com/damiensellier/CtrlrX/releases/download/v5.6.35/CtrlrX-5.6.35-Windows.exe )  These are links to a new version I just discovered even existed called CTRLRx...I had originally gotten the CTRLR vst program from VST free sites that only give warnings now...  man what a rabbit hole.  I can't find the vst of CTRLR I have used for so long on that github page of the original CTRLR.  Looks like there's a .sh file wtf?  Anyway you can find it on a sourceforge link https://sourceforge.net/projects/ctrlr-org-archiv/

Although many CTRLR .panel files --and there are a lot of them made by different people-- seem notoriously glitchy and unusable, I did have a lot of luck with the ones made by MartintarinskeenNL for the Refaces ( https://ctrlr.martintarenskeen.nl/ ).  They just keep getting better and better over the years.  So if you have a Yamaha Reface you'll want to be checking those out.

There are some made by a guy selling them for 5 bucks that I didn't find to be all that great.  Other ones that are free, that I didn't find to be all that great.

Would seem that the trick is to make them actually do what you want when connected and to connect properly.  However with the Prophet you are always working with the limitation that it uses Class Compliance as its USB MIDI driver but that is only a problem in Windows (any changes in that over the last few years?  I doubt it...)  (Yes I capitalized "Class Compliance" because I don't think that it means what they think it means or what people think it means and therefore instead of quotes it is simpler if I just treat it as a proper noun).

"In Ctrlr, the panels are stored as XML files, which can be customized by the user. These files define the layout and functionality of the controls within the Ctrlr application." -AI

You select the MIDI in and out (or thru I suppose if that's something that you know what you're doing with which I still don't get it really myself, MIDI thru I guess that seems pretty dumb but some things make sense like the Prophet's thru brings some midi sent to the prophet, thru to whatever else... while others make little sense like most of these ctrlr panels thru option or for instance the really cryptic Yamaha MIDI driver for Yamaha keyboards (recently updated to version 3.1.5! and without which YAMAHA synths would be only using brainless class compliance as well thank yu very much Yamaha for that gem, see the only reason it even exists is cause it's from the days before windows class compliance but I digress) which has a diagram of MIDI in and out 4x4 and the thru option that makes very little sense there if you can explain that I'd be all ears).  Then you can run your MIDI from across the room with a long cable or with a network MIDI program like RTPMIDI from Tobias Erichsen from the computer you are at, to a computer that is connected to the synth.

I have used CTRLR panels for Refaces, and the JP08.  Never had one for Prophet.  I see lots for the Prophet 6 but not the Prophet.

Prophet still sounds good.  With my setup I only need to play like once a month.  First take perfect albums with detailed video of the creation.  Anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours or longer.

This looks great.  I love the interface.

I tried it on OSX 12.7.6 with Prophet 10 hooked up via USB and here's what I got:

1. Pitch Bend / Mod wheels on interface don't affect sound.
2. Patch changes on interface don't reflect what's on P10.

I think it's because in setting my P10 does not show up in Input Device.

I really like this thing and let me know if I can help get it to work with my setup - or what I am doing wrong.

Great feedback! It definitely sounds like a MIDI routing or driver recognition issue since the P10 isn't showing up as an Input Device. A couple of quick things to check on macOS Monterey

Let me know how I may help.  I like your program.

When I call up a preset on the editor, like 432, the P10 does not show 432.
And vice versa.

Hey all, thank you for the kind words.  I've since released the program as an AU/VST that you can download from github: https://github.com/TonyGermaneri/prophet-panel/releases

It's much more useful as an in track AU (what I use) than a floating web page.  I've added favorites and a way to import/export patches as zip packages or host your own as HTTP URLs.

As far as fixing any bugs I'm super happy to do that just report your bug to the issues tracker on github.  I had mixed success with the getting a connection over USB, it always works over MIDI.  In any case make sure you've set your synth to listen for SysEx on the connection you're using USB or MIDI.

The other program I posted is a complement to the Prophet.  It allows very high detail analysis of waveforms using several different scopes.  I really found most of the audio analysis programs either lame, not in my DAW, or just too damn expensive.  This is both free and the best analysis program I've ever seen or used.  I really dug to unlock the power of compute shaders on the GPU to do real time analysis at very high frame rates - and there's some easter eggs in there too.  Like the other program if you find bugs report them in the issue tracker in github.

Both programs are published as web, AU, VST, osx, windows.  I personally have only used the web and AU versions but I'm like 36% sure the other versions will work too.

If anyone has ideas for improvements or ideas for new programs let me know.  I hope you all enjoy!

This is a design choice.  I could try and treat the core patches as "other class citizens" in the patch catalog and load them by calling a patch change, and I have really considered this.  But I opted instead to make all patches in the patch catalog behave exactly the same: sysex sets.  This means factory patches and patches you make in the program or import are treated the same way.

If it's annoying I can add a setting in the settings panel: "Factory patches use program select", very easy to do.

yeah, that's for sure the reason why.  I'll be it works if you get it hooked up via MIDI.  You can also check your Prophet's global settings and make sure you have sysex via USB set (you can set it to MIDI or USB).  I remember having problems getting it working over USB.

I've since made AU/VST versions you might have better luck with.

Totally forgot about the rolling sampler I built:

https://github.com/TonyGermaneri/waveroll

This was also made specifically for the Prophet.  I needed a way to grab stuff made with the Prophet without having to freeze the track which blows up the jam.  This is distinct from other rolling samplers I've used in that it quantizes the selection allowing you to quickly grab a section and click and drag it into your daw without having to be precise in your selection.

Like the other programs this is a AU/VST/osx/windows/web.
