Dead Prophet 5 rev 4?

Dead Prophet 5 rev 4?
« on: August 08, 2026, 03:16:32 PM »
Hello, everyone -
My Prophet 5 rev has suddenly died, or gone into a coma.  Any help would be much appreciated.

This occurred after unplugging and replugging in power for the Prophet (while it was turned off).  There was no trauma otherwise to the Prophet.

Oddly, I did notice that the red lights (2 dashes) on display remained on when unplugged and power switch was off; is it normal for this when USB is connected?

When I turned the synth back on properly, all controls were completely unresponsive.  The 2 red dashes on the display got brighter (vs. when just powered by USB).   No response to any buttons, keys, controls.

Computer (Mac) also does not "see" the Prophet anymore.  (Checked with AudioMIDI Setup, Logic Pro, and SoundTower Editor).

I had recently (a week ago) updated OS and Panel OS to latest versions (2.10 and 1.13, respectively), and all was working fine since then, until today.

I tried loading the OS 2.10 again in boot loader mode; it did the countdown on the display, then showed RST, so I restarted.  No improvement.  All controls are unresponsive.

Then I tried sending the panel OS in boot loader mode, which was apparently a mistake.  I assumed one needed to send both one after the other, as with the regular mode update.  Since then, even the panel remains dark.  No life at all.

How to bring my beloved Prophet from the dead?  Any guidance would be much appreciated.

(This Prophet has been meticulously treated: light studio use only, and only by me, kept clean and with dustcover when not in use, in a temperature controlled environment).

Updated:  When I plugin the USB cable, all the LEDs light up and the numerical display shows 888.  This occurs whether or not power cabler is connected, or whether or not power switch is on.   (See photo).

Thank you for any assistance!

Please do not forget to contact support for advice.

Please disconnect all cables except the power cable. Please disconnect the USB cable.
Are you currently able to boot into bootloader mode?

Thank you for the reply.
Yes, I have just put in a support ticket also.

- Can no longer boot into boot loader mode (since I did the apparently erroneous step of sending the Panel OS while in Bootloader mode, even though I did that for sending main OS, and power-cycling).
- Tried both the wheels up and Gate cable loop method; neither one gets the synth back into boot loader mode.
- I tried all the steps on the support page you linked also
- Tried different power cables
- Tried direct power cable to wall outlet (rather than from power conditioner)

- Please see my addendum above about the 888 message though.

I don't think support will be reachable over the weekend.

You should start by keeping the USB cable disconnected.
Please disconnect the USB cable during the boot-loading process.

Isn't the cable-based bootloading method only for the module version? Could that be what caused it to break?

I’m not sure if it will be effective, but why not try unplugging the power cable and leaving it disconnected for a while? Don't forget to unplug the USB cable as well. Doing so helps discharge the device. Disconnect all cables.

I did the bootload OS (and panel) updates via MIDI DIN Cables.
I don't recall whether the USB cable was still connected too though, but the Mac couldn't see the Prophet via the USB cable.  I used Sysex Librarian (current version) to send the updates via the MIDI cables, through an iConnectivity MioXL interface.

In its current state, there is no activity at all (no lights, no response) unless the USB cable is connected.  With USB cable connected, everything lights up, but with that 8.8.8 on the display, and still no functionality.  In its current state, I can't seem to get it back into bootload mode no matter what.

What happens if you set the pitch wheel to the center (±0) position and the modulation wheel to its lowest setting—returning them to their standard default positions—before turning on the power? I assume the bootloader mode has already been exited, correct?
Is there any change if you turn on the power with both wheels set to their lowest positions?
In short, this is just a thought regarding whether or not it can be reverted to the default state.

There should be a fuse on the power supply board; if it has blown, it might need to be replaced.
You must unplug the power cable before performing any work. As the fuse is small, please handle it with great care.

If you only need to check it, a visual inspection might suffice; using your smartphone's camera to zoom in should make it easier to read the specifications printed on it. If you intend to remove the fuse, you would need to turn off the power and unplug the power cable first; however, since there are potential risks involved, please contact support to verify the procedure before proceeding.

I hope your Prophet-5 returns to its original condition soon.

Good idea.  Thank you.  Does anyone know the specs of the fuse so I can make sure to have replacements on hand?

Refer to the following page to remove the side panel of the chassis and lift the main panel; you will find the power supply board on the right side.
prophet5-voice-expansion-install

Take your time to carefully examine that board. Since it is your Prophet-5, there is no time limit for the inspection.

When checking whether the fuse has blown,
be sure to unplug the power cable, wait a while, and then use a multimeter to check for continuity.
I do not think this is difficult.

However, I believe the best course of action is to prioritize communication with support and leave the handling of the issue to them.
