Bricked my OB-6 :(

Bricked my OB-6 :(
« on: July 21, 2026, 11:16:05 AM »
I tried to update to OS 1.2.0, and it never completed the 8 to 0 countdown- it froze at 6 and stayed there for a good 20mn.
Now the unit won't boot :(

I tried re-applying it via the bootloader but same thing, the long countdown from 999 to 1 happens but after that, nothing moves - it doesn't restart or do anything.

I've sent a ticket to Sequential, but if anyone had the same issue, I'd love to hear from you.

Well I think I found what happened.

All the documentation, including this very forum, points you to https://sequential.com/updating-ob-6-os/

The problem is that their "latest OS" download, downloads 1.2.0.

If you want 1.8.0 you have to get it from Oberheim's site.

So I've flashed a 10-years old OS, potentially bricking it, because the official download link is wrong.

For anyone reading this.... I managed to fix it by:
- using a Mac with Sysex Librarian instead of a PC
- using the bootloader method with a U-NO midi interface
- IMPORTANT, THIS IS WHAT DID IT: reducing send speed to 50% and setting buffer size to 256. Anything else kept it bricked.

Curious if you tried MIDIOX only or Bome SendSX?

On one of my PCs, MIDIOX always works fine enough with a few output buffer tweaks, but ran into an issue recently on a different PC with USB (not sure if it was the hub or not).....  Tried Bome SendSX instead and it worked on the first try without tweaks.  Much more streamlined interface too.

I tried both. MIDIOX won't send the file (complain about not enough memory, even though I have 64Gb RAM).
Bome was sending it fine but the OB-6 would stay bricked (it would show the first counter all the way to 1, then hang there).

Switching to Mac with the slow settings (regular settings didn't work either) is the only thing that worked.
