Poti Cap quality - wiggly and not straight sitting caps

Poti Cap quality - wiggly and not straight sitting caps
« on: December 16, 2025, 03:57:56 AM »
Hi,

I got a problem with some poti caps on the second TEO-5 I have. The first had to be returned as the LFO2 freqency poti didn't work, but also had the same issue on one cap that I'm having now:

Some poti caps seem to sit not straight on the poti and wobble on the axis when used. Meaning you can feel something is different in use when the caps are not straight.

I now have opened a RMA case over Thomann for getting three new poti caps for the ones with play on the axle instead of returnung the unit. I honestly didn't expect such a problem on multiple units, as the build quality was always described as very good in all reviews I've seen.

Are there other users who have this issue on some of their TEO-5 poti caps?

Sorry to hear about the issues on your new synth! I haven't seen any reports of this, so I don't believe it to be a widespread problem. Hopefully Thomann or our support team can get this sorted for you quickly.

Is the issue with the plastic knob caps themselves, and is it on both the lined and unlined knobs? If you swap the knob cap to another pot or encoder, does the wobble follow the knob cap (pots are silver metal shafts, encoders are black plastic shafts)?

You can always reach out to us directly for assistance. If it is a new unit and you just need some knob caps, we can provide those at no cost under warranty. Our email is support@oberheim.com.

Hi gus,

thx for the reply.

The issue is on the knob caps themselves, and only the lined ones. Swapping to another pot didn't help, some caps seem to be a bit damaged inside which explains the play on the axle. Inside the lined caps the white plastic has three a bit higher holding lines, of which one is scrubbed out pretty much. On a second pot cap I removed for taking a look inside, even a little piece of on of theses holding lines broke out.

I attached some images, so you get a better idea what I mean.

Yes, it was already out of the box. I actually tested the knobs a bit when I got my second TEO-5 unit as the serial number was close to the one I got and returned before which also had the same issue on one of the knob caps.

The replacement request for the knob caps is already running over Thomann, so I'll wait for now till they contact me with their solution.

Thx for the help and merry x-mas.
