Which P5 filter specifically?
« on: September 28, 2025, 04:37:05 AM »
The Prophet 5 is known for two different filter types, the SSM/SSI SSM2040 (Rev 1/2, etc.) and the Curtis CEM3320 (original Pro One).

Which filter type does the Fourm use?
Prophet 10, OB-X8m, Prophet 6, OB-6, 3rd Wave, Prophet 12m, Prophet Rev2-16, Toraiz AS-1, Pro 2, Korg Polysix, Roland JP-8080, Roland System-8, Virus TI2, Moog SlimPhatty, Hydrasynth desktop, Roland SPD-SX SE / Octapad, Maschine, Cubase/Ableton/Akai MPC

Which filter type does the Fourm use?
“The new SSI 2140 chip, the new revision of the 2040 from Dave Rossum, as in the Prophet-10 rev4”

I'm a little perplexed on this part:

"The envelopes are all-analog, modeled on those on the Prophet-5 rev4. “We actually did pretty extensive listening tests and graphing of the filters or envelopes in an old Prophet and recreated those in software, which was quite a lot of work,” Carson says.

I think all the envelopes on the newer Sequential synths are software based rather than voltage controlled... is the Fourm different in this regard?  Isn't a software based envelope digital by definition?

If Carson happens to read this, could you clarify what is meant?  thanks

"Recreated in software" would imply the envelopes are digital, programmed to emulate the original analog P5 envelopes (also digitally emulated in the P5R4).

The "envelopes are all-analog" is an inaccurate statement.  Unless we're in some alternate universe where analog circuits use software.

The line is a little blurred at times, as an example I'd cite the difference in voltage controlled oscillators versus digitally controlled analog oscillators versus oscillators that are fully digitally generated.  Three very different things, but as consumers or potential buyers it's nice to understand what's happening where.

Agree the wording in the cdm article is a bit confusing.  They are digitally generated envelopes, same as those used in the prophet 5 rev4.

i read something about bass compensation in the filter of the fourm. is this true, and is the filter really then exactly the same as the p10 rev 4?
