USB Port Protector

USB Port Protector
« on: June 04, 2025, 07:20:31 PM »
I'm prototyping a USB port protector for my P10 because I want to protect against accidental yanks which could damage the port.

The TRS 1/4" inputs on the back are secured with washers, so this is sort of the same idea.

The protector fits snug, and does not need any magnets, but I can add that.  And I found that there are two types of sizes for the end of USB cables, one pretty standard, and another for chunky ones.

Ableton Live device's cables have a right angle turn and you can find them online.  https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/merchandise/   I noticed this at a store one time, so I went out and got one.  Actually it would be perfect for the Prophet since it goes upside down like that ( I consider it upside down with the bevels on top) and then heads left when looking at it straight on.  Since there is no impediment in that direction.  Then you could duct tape it if you are still concerned about it moving or being yanked.

https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/merchandise/ Still only 15EU for it from Ableton directly

Another trick I sometimes do with cables of all sorts, if they even remotely resemble a risk for yanks, is tie the connecting end down to something like a keyboard stand leg or similar with a velcro strap to anchor that and separate it from the longer floppy part.
Prophet 10, OB-X8m, Prophet 6, OB-6, 3rd Wave, Prophet 12m, Prophet Rev2-16, Toraiz AS-1, Pro 2, Korg Polysix, Roland JP-8080, Roland System-8, Virus TI2, Moog SlimPhatty, Hydrasynth desktop, Roland SPD-SX SE / Octapad, Maschine, Cubase/Ableton/Akai MPC

Actually
I have been using a much longer 5m or so USB cable with the same right angle turn since early 2023.

It is a decent cable that I bought to go across the ceiling from the old days when I had the prophet and refaces on the opposite side.  Works fine.  Just a cable I bought off the online sites that support selling everything for instance sellers that sell cables.

Thank You.  That's good to know 5m works well.  I'll be looking for a similar length.

How's that search going?  I was looking around to see if I could still find the same one and I saw this one on Amazon: (Not the same one I use, which seems better and this is super cheap at 6.99 but who knows.  It's structured somewhat the same with the same turn looks like anyways Mine is clear plastic with sort of a metallic shielding looking net under the plastic.  A bit thicker than this one too and this is only 3m.  Ya never know it could be ok)

This company has some R angle cables up to 16 feet, though only USB A to B, no USB-Cs for the host end. I've bought a number of cables from them over the years.
