Thank you. Much appreciated.  My understanding is if I send that SYS-EX command the Prophet will output the status of all the knobs and buttons ?

Can you recommend a program for mac OSX which would allow me to send a custom Sys-Ex command like this ?

Sound Tower may be an easier option to use.

Yes it does.

I use SysEx Librarian to the OB-X8 as well as all other of my synths with programs memory. Simple and stable. Can recommend it.

I'm slightly embarrassed to say I have no idea how to send a custom sys-ex command out to the prophet to get it to dump the buffer.

I thought I would type the following somewhere into Logic Audio and hit play:
1111 0000
0000 0001
0011 0001
0000 0110
1111 0111

And then the P10 would "dump" the buffer into Sys-Ex Librarian where I would record it.

I obviously do not know what I am doing.

I've recently created a Logic Pro template that among other things requests and captures a sysex dump of the Take 5 edit buffer -- I imagine it would work the same with your Prophet if you swap out the Take 5 sysex request with the appropriate Prophet sysex. The template includes both project and track notes describing setup and use, and I've attached it here in case anyone wants to give it a try. Let me know what you think or if you have any questions.

Requires Logic Pro 11.1.2 because prior versions of Logic could save but not send sysex through the External Instrument plug-in.

This is really cool.  Thanks for uploading the file.  I'll take a look and report back.

This is the most simple way so far I found.

1. Create a new patch in the user preset, ex. 111
2. Save it to the Prophet
3. Export it to Sys-Ex Librarian

- I can save that Sys-Ex file in the song folder, and just load it in when needed.
- So I can have 10 different songs each with their own version of user preset 111

Sounds like that should work.

Honestly, I feel like Soundtower's PlugSE ought to be able to grab the current patch and restore it by defaultf, and I've had a conversation with Mark about that possibility, but the last few versions blow away the edit buffer when the plug-in is instantiated from a template. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What happens if you use the stand alone version and not the SE version ?

The SE version doesn't blow away the edit buffer when added to an existing project, it only does so when added to a template and a new project is created from that template.

But neither stand alone nor plug-in version by default grab the edit buffer, that would have to be a feature SoundTower adds to future releases. There are buttons you click to retrieve the edit buffer sysex, so it's easy enough to do, but I'm all about streamlining where I can. ;)

Another simple option for saving patch data with your song data:

  • Create a new external MIDI track, start recording and initiate a patch dump from the synth.
  • Play the track to send the sysex data back to the synth.
That's the core of what my template sets out to do, but does require you to save the patch first. And, of course, only works with Logic Pro 11.1.2 or newer (hopefully).
