New Prophet, stuck notes (reversed midi-on/off)
« on: April 02, 2025, 02:51:40 AM »
Hi,

I received my new Prophet 10 on Monday, it sounds great! :-)
I like all the extra features, stacks, round robin, mono mode etc. I'm also hoping for bi-timbral on different midi channels.

I have a couple of issues:
1
There's a rattle from inside the case, which might be the power socket/ board as this is a bit loose and the rattle comes from this area. Is there a service manual so I can open it up to check for loose bits, or would this invalidate my guarantee?

2
But the main one is that midi-on and midi-off get switched so notes get stuck on, and notes don't play until the key has been released or note in a region has finished (Logic Pro). I'm connected via USB. Someone I know has an R4 and has no problems with USB.
I couldn't find a way to search the forum, but did find a similar post about other Sequential synths with this note-on/off switched problem. There was no resolution.

Thanks for any hints or suggestions.

Mat

Forgot to add.
I updated to 2.0.6 and 1.13 OSs, I ran the tuning and calibration, reset the Globals, powered off and on after each OS update, and confirmed the OSs installed correctly via keypresses (hold Globals +1/ 2).

One note that the instructions were slightly wrong, in that the OS update said it counts from 10 down to zero, but mine only counted down to 1; and the panel OS omits the countdown from 10 to 0 altogether, the display goes blank for a few seconds then displays the patch number but never displays RST as it says (I waited for a few minutes).

It's normal for the IEC receptacle to move around a bit, if that is what is rattling. Otherwise, please reach out to support@sequential.com and we can help you out/provide guided instructions for opening the synth if needed.

Midi on/off reversing is on our bug list. We haven't been able to reproduce the issue consistently in house, so sending any details (post-troubleshooting) would be helpful. As always, make sure you're not in a MIDI feedback loop of sorts. If you're able to try a different DAW or computer, that's always helpful too.

Enjoy your new synth!

Thanks Gus,

I am in touch with support.
Would it invalidate my guarantee if I open it to check for the rattle? I'm sure it's something simple. It completely stops if I press down on the top right corner (near the aftertouch button), not at all if I hold the IEC, but half stops if I press down on the IEC lead.

It's not just the notes reversing but all the buttons and knobs go weird: if I press a button nothing happens, then I press a different one and now the first button changes etc, it's as if everything sent via usb gets delayed by one event. I'm testing on midi Din now to see if it happens there.

Thanks!

Does the synth behave normal when Midi und USB is unplugged? If yes, you seen to have a Midi-Loop that mixes up the Midi messages. Happens sometimes.

It seems to be okay (so far today) with just midi, not okay using USB. I have Local set to off. Are there any other settings I may have missed on the Prophet or Logic Pro? (I really hope it's something I'm doing wrong).

If support guides you to open up the unit, it will not void your warranty.

That's interesting that all MIDI gets reversed - that does make me wonder if there's something going on in Logic. If you have Snoize MIDI Monitor, you can 'spy' on the output of Logic to the synth, or at the output of the synth. That way you can see if anything funky gets sent to the synth when the issue occurs. If you haven't already done a search for Logic on this forum, there is a bunch of good info!

It sounds like you are getting unwanted midi out from your Logic program.  To me that sounds like a MIDI thru issue but I never used Logic so I have no starting point to discern what the actual issue may be.  A MIDI track that takes an input from "all" is something you experience in Studio One, this can lead to a VST synth taking midi from 7 or 10 different keyboards if you don't change it to something else.  It is literally the default in Studio One to take MIDI input from All devices.

I found this in my Appendix A Troubleshooting and support in my manual and will put it here:
If your prophet is behaving erratically, this is almost always caused by a MIDI feedback loop.  Make sure that any MIDI Thru functionality is turned off on the MIDI interface/hardware or in the MIDI software application.  Disconnect all Prophet 10 MIDI connections and see if the problem persists.  You can also monitor the MIDI traffic with MIDI Monitor (Mac OS) or MIDI-OX (Windows) to see if the Prophet 10 is beign overrun with duplicate messages.

Welcome to my world, been frustrated by this problem for years.  Logged support calls but got nowhere.
USB MIDI always starts inverting on/off notes after a period of time.  It's not a midi loop, or a problem with the PC/MAC, I get same issue plugging the USB into a MIO XL and removing PC from equation.
DIN MIDI works fine
