Broken table of contents
« on: October 13, 2024, 12:57:44 PM »
Do you have a working table of contents in the manual P5/10 manuals? All links take me to the top, which is really frustrating. It's not like this synth came out yesterday. What's going on?

Has it ever worked like others?  :-\  (Like the Kemper Profiler Manual for example)

To get to desired page write the page number in the little box in upper left corner   :)

Cheers !

Not sure what you mean by that. I have owned a lot of gear, and this is the only manual I can remember in recent history that has a broken ToC.

I use Preview (the MacOS built-in PDF reader) and I do not see the page numbers, unless I keep coming back to page 5 where the ToC is printed.

My OB-X8 manual doesn't have this problem, nor did my Prophet6, so the people at Sequential working on manuals should have enough experience to get the basics right.

I meant "has it ever worked like others?" (manuals) ........   ::)

It does not work with Mac OS preview ( like other pdf manuals ) but if you open
the manual by clicking this link
https://davesmith.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Prophet-10-Users-Guide-1.4.pdf
you will come to this page (see picture) and there is the box (marked with red circle) where you enter the
page number you want to read .....

Thanks for offering help, but being able to jump to a page is not the main problem.

I think every PDF reader probably has that kind of feature. In preview it's "go to page" / option-cmd-g

The problem is not knowing what page to jump to. Without a working table of contents in the sidebar, you need to keep coming back to the page where it was rendered.

I considered using go to page as a workaround, and found that if I jump to page 1 (which is the minimum in Preview) it takes me to Chapter 1, so I can't even jump to the rendered ToC  >:(

Maybe I have high standards, but I find this unacceptable for an expensive professional device produced by a fairly big company. It shouldn't be that difficult to fix. It's an essential part of writing a decent manual, and many years have passed since this manual came out.

The P5/10 comes with a printed manual as well (but not the Oberheim OB-X8 for some reason) that is a good resource to read now and then.

Ah, thanks for reminding me! There was one taped to the bottom of the box. I forgot about it. I will use that then.

The first pages in the manual is numbered with Roman letters, where " V " is page 5 ( first page of TOC )
so if you enter the letter "V" in the box you get to the first page of TOC ....   ( Picture #1 )

If you click the most left "box" the sidebar opens .... If that's what you meant  ( Picture #2 )

It's a "workaround" I know, but I think the "bug" in the pdf manual is not prio #1 for the staff .... sooo   ::)

Nice that'll do!

I was indeed talking about that sidebar, but then switch to ToC instead of pictures. That's the most convenient way to navigate a PDF, but in this case those links do not work.

Anyway, I have a paper manual now, and I can jump to/from the rendered ToC, so I think I will survive  ;)

Cheers
