TEO-5 vs TAKE 5 output level?

TEO-5 vs TAKE 5 output level?
« on: September 07, 2024, 12:29:35 PM »
Can somebody with a TEO-5 and a TAKE 5 please compare the output levels?
Starting with an Basic Program (INIT) patch on both, the TAKE 5 is FAR louder than the TEO-5.

Just in case anyone asks...
Both Master levels the same.
Both input gains on the mixer are the same.
Both mixer faders the same.
Level difference is evident in headphones too.

Edit, more testing:
I got both synths set to a Basic Program again. One OSC, identical settings. pressed HOLD on both. Hit C & G on both. I can accurately say, there's a 16db difference. That's how much louder the TAKE 5 is than the TEO-5.

Can anyone confirm?

Yes, that has occurred with me as well. I was comparing the sounds of both and definitely encountered that. You're not alone there!

I had them plugged into my Yamaha mixer and I noticed that I'd have to crank of the TEO-5 volume and lower the Take 5 to get them more in line.

The output levels are indeed different, nothing is wrong with your particular synth. The SEM allows for a wide dynamic range, from a single oscillator to all 5 oscillators in unison with resonance cranked. On both synths, the analog signal is digitized post filter - the TEO is a bit lower in the analog domain to avoid clipping when entering the digital domain.

You'll notice on a basic patch, program volume defaults to 100. This parameter digitally increases the gain when set above 100 (100-127). If you turn this parameter up, levels will be closer to the Take 5. It is possible to hear clipping under certain circumstances when the program volume is cranked.

Thank you for the in depth explanation. Makes complete sense.

Just my first day, but I noticed the output volume is set to '100' by default on new patches and that it sounds a lot louder at '120'.
I assume 127 is the top level.

Just received a brand new TEO-5 today! I have both TEO-5 and Take 5 here side by side, and not noticing a huge output difference, maybe just a little. The Take 5 is a little more brash and "in your face". TEO-5 just sounds big and lovely. Both keepers IMO!

Where can I locate the program volume setting on the TEO-5, and are there any specific parameters I should check for adjusting overall output levels?

Yes, I also do not have "Program Volume" in the Program menu.  In the current online manual, which today shows v 1.0.2 it shows "Program Volume" as option 15 in the Program menu.  My option 15 is "Sub Level", however I do have option 22 for "Voice Volume", which I assume is the same with just a naming difference?  My OS is 1.0.0 and it looks like there does not appear to be a newer OS available either here on the forum or Oberheims site.  Perhaps the naming will be updated once an OS update does get released?  Right now my menu options are not matching the manual...

I noticed there was a Huge difference in volume from the Take5 to the TEO5, but if you try to make a patch, depending on what it is, in my instance it was a dirty bass patch, and you engage overdrive 100% as well as distortion, you get a very very "in your face sound" I'm not sure I noticed it like this in the Take5. The master volume knob on the TEO5 for this patch is at 5-o'clock. Basically it's at 1-5% wet, which is absolutely wild. Love this synth. Tons of headroom, but now I think I understand why. Also there is that VoiceVolume in the Program Menu.

Thank you Oberheim and Sequential.

The manual seems to be a copy/paste update of the Take 5 manual and not everything was updated to reflect the TEO-5’s options which are different.  Option 22 “Voice Volume” is the correct parameter on the TEO-5.  It’s called “Program Volume” on the Take 5 and is in a different location in the menu structure, thus the error in the manual.
