OB-X8 vs Xpander

Any thoughts regarding OB-X8 vs Xpander?

They are two different beasts with some differences but also similarities. I have the OB-X8 and the Xpander and was making preparations this week for making a YT clip later on where I compare them side by side, not a deep dive but a dive. Started out from two sawtooth oscillators, a 4 pole filter and the EGs (that includes some mod matrix in the Xpander). My observations so far:

- The filter works different but can be set to get about the same result.

- The EGs at the Xpander are smoother while OB-X8 are much faster and snappier. The OB-X setting of the EGs are most close to the Xpander even if the OB-8 was closer in time of manufacturing.

- The beating between the oscillators are more organic at the Xpander, but hey, it is 40 years old and tastefully slightly detuned. It is possible to come close even there, especially with the vintage knob and osc detume at page 2 involved.

I have a lot to dive in to before ready to make a conclusion with similarities and differences containing similarities and differences. But the process has begun.

You’ve already noticed that the filters on both synths work differently, but can be set to get similar results. This makes sense since the OB-X8 is designed to emulate the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 filters, each having their own quirks, while the Xpander has a much more flexible, multimode filter setup.
