Just chiming in to say that I have also experienced the “countdown of doom” as I call it. Have had my desktop evolver purchased as open box from RobotSpeak in San Francisco for about 10 years. It only started doing it within the past couple years. At first it was an isolated incident, then it began happening more frequently.
I will be using it and it will lock up. It stops responding to knob movements and will stop the sequencer but sustain whatever sound is playing. Then like you mentioned the screen will start counting down from a random number. 4 is a number that shows up often but it’s also sometimes a random number like in the 40s or less. Sometimes it’s a slow countdown, and other times it counts down faster. Once it finishes the countdown or gets down to 0, one of three things will happen.
1) It just goes back to normal and continues playing whatever sequence was playing before it froze, if the sequencer was running that is.
2) It outputs no sound at all.
3) It outputs a very high level of noise. Like if you had noise generator turned up to 100 along with master volume, patch volume, vca all turned up to 100 as well. But possibly even louder than that it seems.
For me unplugging it and plugging it back in seems to fix it. But it will happen again most likely, because it’s completely random for me now. I could go days or weeks without seeing it. Or I’ve had it happen multiple days in a row or even multiple times in one session
I have gotten it on video but just a few times and never the whole before and after process. This was just me pulling my
Phone out real quick then recording it happening to document and see what the outcome would be.
