Prophet X overlap with Waldorf Iridium ?

Prophet X overlap with Waldorf Iridium ?
« on: May 21, 2024, 12:27:41 PM »
Hi,

I'm seriously considering getting a PX while they are still in stock. However, I own a Waldorf Iridium KB, and I wonder if the two machines would overlap too much on the sampling part.

Opinions, advice, and experiences are welcome! Thanks in advance.

Both the PX and Iridium KB can play back and manipulate samples. They both likely share some basic sample editing features like start/end point adjustment, looping, and volume control.

The PX and the Waldorf Iridium KB are both musical instruments that are capable of sampling and synthesizing sounds. If you create music in a variety of styles, the versatility of both instruments can be an advantage. If each instrument has its own strengths, owning both may be a sensible choice.

The Prophet X (PX) and Waldorf Iridium KB are both powerful instruments, but they approach sampling and synthesis differently, which may help reduce overlap depending on your use case.

I always felt the Prophet X’s focus was samples and using them as oscillators in a subtractive synthesis structure. The Waldorf Iridium and Quantum feels like sampling it’s just another engine but not really the one people or Waldorf tend to focus on. While the Prophet X has a variety of samples and tones out of the gate (from bread and butter to experimental) Waldorf had loads of bread and butter PCM samples in their Blofeld and they didn’t even bother putting them into the Quantum/Iridium. So most of the demos and focus have been wavetables and virtual analog with some FM or granular sounds only here and there.

I guess I’ve always found synths that have 4 or 5 engines have a hard time finding their own voice or being distinguishable. You almost always feel like you are focusing on one or two or skipping one of the engines.

I'm also quite concerned about interference and creating uncharacteristic sounds.

Elektron's PX is a powerful sampler with lots of control and creative features. It allows you to create and edit sampled sounds with great flexibility.

Owning both the PX and the Waldorf Iridium KB will certainly give you a rich and varied range of sounds; although there is overlap in sampling capabilities, each machine has its own unique character, allowing you to expand your musical creativity.

The Iridium KB and PX have some overlap in sampling, but the PX’s analog filters and lush, cinematic character set it apart. If you want a more immediate and warm sound to complement the Iridium’s depth, the PX could be a great addition.
