I found this hilarious but intriguing.

While I was never really a fan of Prince's music personally, I recognized early on that he was extraordinary talented when it came to marketing.  Taking steps to patent the appearance of an instrument as seen on stage like this, especially during the emerging "music video" scene at the time and simultaneously ignoring anything involving the actual sound or technical design of an instrument, is no doubt a brilliant marketing move in that day.... in the 80's when music video appearance was everything.
