Espen Kraft's new 80's synths sample bank for the Prophet X
« on: October 17, 2023, 09:22:45 AM »
Espen sampled over 20 different classic vintage synths and just made them available for the Prophet X at a very reasonable price of 35 USD.

The samples (about 1.5 GBytes) sound amazing and also contain several multi sample patches to stretch across the keyboard. He also included several samples with multiple velocity layers.

DAW-less and going down the Eurorack rabbit hole.

If I have Gaia, and M1, and Mellotron samples in my User 1, 2, and 3, do I rename my recently purchased Espen sample bank u04 before installing? They come with the name u00. Does u00 go into User bank 1, and u01 go into User bank 2, etc? I don't see a User bank 0 on my PX, so I'm guessing the number has a 1 offset? Thanks for any help!

Figured it out: u03 goes in User Bank (Samples) 4. . . All working great now. The prompt on the Prophet X confused me with some weird numbers and a warning that I'd be replacing Sample content (which I wasn't.)   PS> - really enjoying Espen's work, even though I don't have room to install his programs at this point, just plugging some of his synth samples into my existing Programs so far, fattening things up.

That sounds like an incredible deal! Having access to such a variety of classic vintage synth sounds for the Prophet X at that price is really impressive. The multi sample patches and multiple velocity layers must make for a truly dynamic and expressive playing experience.

i find it very disconcerting in Espen's latest video, that he no longer recommends the PX.

Honestly I wouldn’t pay too much attention to his new video. I’m not sure if it stems from trolling or something a bit more serious. Even when people pointed out flaws in some of his logic he dismissed them. In either case there’s been a lot of “clap back videos” from Inhalt, Miles Away, Synth Samurai, etc and even some of his comments on his Facebook page (we are friends) just made me think it’s best to not engage or put much stock into it and I just snoozed him for a month.

If it’s worth anything he did state in a comment on Facebook that he loves the Prophet X and uses it a lot but he won’t recommend it...I’m assuming because he feels things in general are overpriced.

Kind of sad to see a channel that was praising gear and music and doing more tutorial/demo content turn into destructive criticism for the sake of negativity.

In either case I never understood the idea of someone being so against how others spend their own money....and how so many care that a random stranger on the internet is telling them how to spend their money. Man is a crazy animal.

Doubtful. Someone in the comments stated that he made a whole video praising the John Bowen Solaris, a full digital machine based around software in a hardware form and from his response.....well like I said above (not sure if it's a troll attempt or something genuinely more serious).

Espen is kind of an endearing character, and it's not uncommon for him to contradict things he's said in not too distant past.  In one interview a couple of years ago when talking about gear he mentioned he would love to own a Prophet 10 Rev 4.  Around the time I first found his channel, he said he didn't like using plug-ins because only real hardware inspired him, and recently he's been extolling the virtues of software over hardware.

I do remember that he quit his full-time day job in IT during the pandemic as his YT channel was taking off, and in a recent live stream he said he regretted that decision because it's been more of a struggle than anticipated.  He also sold a lot of his gear, and seems to have streamlined his setup toward minimalism.  I've also noticed that the prices he mentioned for certain synths is much higher than US MSRP, so yeah I can see how his perception would be skewed if a 3rd Wave would cost him the equivalent of $7k USD....in that case I feel like his grievance should be about the cost of acquiring gear in Norway rather than going after synth manufacturers.

It is human nature I think to adopt a negative attitude toward material things that are outside of our reach... it helps us cope with not being able to own them, and I hear that tendancy all over Espen's recent material.

At the end of the day I think Espen has realized that controversy and negativity earn views on social media, and when choosing subject matter that puts food on the table, then maybe at least in the short-term and when it comes to YT click bait subjects, the old saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity" might have a smidgeon of truth to it.  I think this is why he just started a second channel.... he is probably going to dabble in the business of being a professional troll/curmudgeon to generate views but wants to keep it separate from "the real Espen" channel.

his rant about the PX in the current video wasn't about being overpriced. he was complaining about how buggy it was. he said when it works, it's fine though. in all fairness, he did buy his PX used, and there's no telling if it was one of the units from the first batch of PXs. like most new synths, the first batch can have all sorts of bugs, and problems. i had a PXL for a few years, and it worked fine. bought a PX a few months back, and it also works fine. both were bought new.
