Sustain pedal -> ARP hold vs sustain note... why not both?

Hey everyone,

I'm very confused as to why the sustain pedal on the P12 requires me to choose between ARP hold or sustaining notes. I'm coming from the Virus world where the sustain pedal when activated will basically do ARP hold (if it's an ARP patch) and sustaining notes (if it's not an ARP patch).

Does anyone know why we have to choose one or the other? I just don't get it...
