Best multi-effects for the Prophet 10?
« on: May 08, 2022, 06:40:05 AM »
Ok, now that I have solve my issue between P10 module and P10 eyboard - I will buy the keys version - and where to set it with the small room I'm in, new plan: what effects, pedals or rack, would be appropriate after it. It will be connected to a mixer with a Aux send that goes to a TC M-One XL but my P08 as also an H9 on it and plugged just after it before hitting the mixer.
Should I find another H9 basic, so, I will have the extensions for free? But now, it's even more difficult to find the basic, most of the time, used, it's the core one or the Max out, so, expensive like the one I have. And I might want to try some Styrmon but they seem to be complicated, the big sky to start with.
Any thoughts?

I don't find the Strymon pedals to be complicated at all, they're knobby and very quick to get the result you want once you know your way around them.  The multi pedals like the Mobius, Timeline, Bigsky take a small amount of menu diving to get to everything, but I think they are a well-balanced between having a lot of different algorithms and having good control over the parameters, which are going to differ across algorithms.  The less expensive Strymon pedals that are dedicated to a single effect will be a little quicker to dial in as a general rule.

My favorite reverb pedal is the OTO Bam.  The BigSky is great but I think the Bam has such amazing ranges in its knobs for what I think is a more vintage and transparent sounding set of reverb algorithms.  BigSky is great too but many of the settings add its own color to the sound and a lot of times I just want to hear the core tone of the synth carried.

Ok, I've never heard about the Bam, I will look for it, that is a lot. So, rest of other Styrmon, timeline, minions could be a great choice to pair the Bam with? On the P12, I have TC Electronics pedals, Corona chorus limited edition + Helix Phaser + Hall of Fame but I'm trying to get some other pedals for my future P10. Thanks for the Bam.

I was cogitating for several months which reverb, delay or multi fx pedal to go for. Then I remembered the recent book by Adam Holzman, who recommended that, if one wanted just one external effects pedal for their synths, it should be a delay pedal.
Still, I thought I should get the BigSky and I was almost pulling the trigger. One last time would I check which other pedals Strymon had to offer, until I noticed a mustard colour delay pedal.

Enter the Strymon Volante. A stereo tape/drum delay with plenty of knobs, just like the Prophet itself, and, behold, with a spring reverb. The 4 playheads are totally configurable and can even be panned freely in the stereo field. Add a SOS looper on top of it, or rather underneath it, given the secondary functions. This pedal demands to be played and tweaked, just like the Prophet itself. So that’s the one pedal I’ve chosen for myself.

Hi my god, yes,of course, I had completely forgotten about it, but thought that one type of  reverb would be too short! According to your demo, not at all and the quality and versatility of this delay is crazy, thanks a lot for these great exemples!!

Yes, I think the Bam is a great choice with any other pedals in the chain.  There is also the OTO Bim and Buom which I don't own but get good reviews.  The Chase Bliss CXM 1978 looks amazing but its pricy and I'm not convinced it has the transparent sound I seek and I feel part of the cost is motorized faders (nice but non essential).

On the P12, I have TC Electronics pedals, Corona chorus limited edition + Helix Phaser + Hall of Fame but I'm trying to get some other pedals for my future P10. Thanks for the Bam.

I have the Hall of Fame 2 which is good sounding reverb for the price but not being able to mix the signal is annoying.

A recently released pedal you might consider, depending on what you're going for, is the Boss RE-202 space echo.  I'm guessing the overall category of sounds might be similar to the Volante.  For diversity of delay options its hard to beat the Timeline, it has tape echo as one of the algorithms.

A recently released pedal you might consider, depending on what you're going for, is the Roland RE-201 space echo.  I'm guessing the overall category of sounds might be similar to the Volante.  For diversity of delay options its hard to beat the Timeline, it has tape echo as one of the algorithms.

By recent, you actually mean the Boss RE-202 and not the original Roland RE-201. For a live guitarist, my guess is that the RE-202 might be a better fit because mono only (or sum thereof) won’t matter too much on stage and tweakability is limited with your feet anyway.

For a keyboardist, the Volante is more flexible unless you want that Roland sound or you prefer having (difficult) access to 5 reverbs instead of just the spring reverb.

Thanks.. and that's correct, I was just coming back to update my post after I realized the error.  The RE-202 is the new one... also the RE-20 was another Boss recreation of the original Roland RE-201.

For a keyboardist, the Volante is more flexible (except for in the reverb territory) unless you want exactly that original Roland sound.

If you want the vintage sounds, you need distortion and a good chorus unit.  The go-to distortion back in the 80's was the Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-9.  Ibanez is building them again and they are about $100.  Just as good as the originals.

The Lexicon MX series gives great chorus effects as well as delay and reverb.  They are NLA new, but they are readily available on the used market.  I have an MX 300 and it works really well.

Hello,
I´m looking too, but i found nothing, because two things :
I don´t want to loose the analog audiopath. So it´s hard to find an effect, which is completely analog
and gives a stereo signal.

Second : There´s one pedal i would take for this before all, but it´s allways here in an Auxway of the
RME Totalmix : Strymon Timeline

That is, what i could recommend !
The Timeline generates a digital signal and add it to the complete analog signalpath of the drysignal.
At least to a relation of 75wet/25dry.
The timeline offers many parameters under the hood - but it´s not difficult to handle it.
The Timeline is really diverse, nearly everything is possible and it sounds really good. I use it next
to the Volante, which is also really nice, but for one delay after the Prophet i would always take the
Timeline. And : It generates nice Choruseffects also !
Finally a hundred sounds storable. If somebody use it superprofessionel (I´m to chaotic for this...)
he could dump Strymons banks assigned to the groups of the Prophet and get names for the patches
of the Prophet by this way...

I agree, the Timeline is such a diverse unit with so many algorithm types, it's hard to imagine needing another delay pedal unless someone needs one that's cheaper/smaller for a pedalboard.

The Mobius is similar in the sense that I'm having trouble finding chorus pedals that can sound as good -- thinking of getting a second one or maybe looking at Boss MD-500.  One thing appealing about the MD-500 is it can do 2 effects simultaneously.

I did recently pick up an Empress Reverb which I'm having a lot of fun with - it does have a delay+reverb algorithm that's quite good.   I do appreciate the smaller size and the sheer number of modes.  One thing that might not be apparent at first glance is that most of the modes have sub-modes, for example the Hall mode has a classic hall and a modern hall.  All good stuff, it is analog dry through as well.  At the moment it is on my Prophet12 instead of the Prophet 10, but pedals have a tendancy to move around from time to time in my studio.

You know you're talking to a veteran when the TS-9 Tube Screamers are lovingly mentioned.   8)

A few months ago I bought the UAFX-trio Golden, Starlight, and Astra for my Prophet 5. My brother have the Golden as his main reverb in his guitar-rig, and at some point I had a go with a synth and that pedal... I was sold on the classic approach to the emulations. To me they captured the essence of the vintage gear they are ment to emulate. But I know that's subjective  ;)  For the classic sounds they do the trick for me...

If I'm going more ambient/ethereal/experimental, I would supplement with something like Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water / Meet Maud..., but that's in the heavy modulasjon-category

I would also recommend checking out the GFI Specular Tempus reverb/delay-pedal... That is also one awesome piece of gear in my opinion...
Prophet 5 rev4
Moog Matriarch
Take 5
Moog Grandmother
Nord Electro 5

(Mopho X4, Prophet REV2 16, Prophet 6, OB6, PRO 3) ... as well as a pile of gear from other manufacturers
