Help with MIDI Keyboard Controllers - Only plays drum kits, no synth sounds

I've spent several hours trying play my Tempest like a synth using a MIDI controller.

My controller is set to MIDI Channel 1 and same with MIDI Polyphonic Keyboard play on the Tempest. I can play synth chords on the Tempest just fine using "16 Tunings" using the pads, but my MIDI controller is triggering a drum kit from the Tempest. I think something may not be assigned properly. Any advice?

You need to have a synth sound on one of the 32 sounds (A1 - B16) and then assign that to be the pad that is controlled by the external keyboard.
