Eurorack Evolver

I was sort of curious: What if you wanted to approximate a Desktop Evolver with Eurorack modules? How many modules would it take, and how much would it cost? Well, friends, here it is:

https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/303236

It's a monster, weighing in at 44 modules and $5500USD. Keep in mind, too, that you'd need a couple of A-100P6-sized cases. So add another $1000 to the price.

Like I said, this is an approximate Evolver. The sequencers are only 8-step, and it would be challenging to maintain a stereo path throughout the system in some cases.

Wow, just the mention of the concept is interesting - imagine a blue/purple-faced Eurorack Evolver with patch points (a la Mother-32 or the proposed Tom Oberheim SEM), yum!

There's too much black / white / silver on modules these days....

Deciding what patch points to put in an Evolver of a reasonble size would cause some controversy, but it would certainly be interesting.

Ha ha! Love it.

I tried making an Evolver inspired voice that would fit into a 100hp box of the Waldorf KB37. I failed.

https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/259615

I thought all the utility of the Mother-32 would be a great place to start.

I got hung up on stereo filters. I tried again. Maybe I made room for tuned feedback but then I lost a sequencer. Sigh.

Basically all the exercises were a $2000 fail. :-)

My eurorack rig is inspired by the Evolver, too; but I'm not trying to capture all of the capabilities of an Evolver, just some of its spirit: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/301144

The two Functions and the Kinks are very good at producing sequencer-like evolving patterns, the DSM01 gives it the familiar filter sound, and I'll finish it off with the DSM03, which will bring in one of my favorite Evolver features, tuned feedback. A future annex will bring in a sample-based oscillator (probably an A-112-2), a pair of small sequencers, and a multi-mode filter. It won't be an Evolver, but it will be able to do Evolver-like things; some of them, it will do better.

I saw that the name of your rack references the Waldorf KB37. Are you going to get one? I noticed the Waldorf about a week ago, and really liked the idea. 107HP is kind of a weird size, but it looks like a really cool opportunity to make the synth of your dreams. I've been kicking around the math (both kinds: financial math and HP math) since I saw it.
