NEW TEMPEST CAN'T SLEEP FOREVER

NEW TEMPEST CAN'T SLEEP FOREVER
« on: April 21, 2021, 04:21:54 PM »
Wondering, for how long will we all look at our "old", "retired" Tempests and wait until something new (Tempest 2 or... else groovy thing...) show up and finally make our hearts beat faster and faster again?!

Not necessary 100% analog, could be hybrid /sampler/groove monster/"PXbased" or whatever! Called Tempest or not! I'm fine with Tornado : ) Buggy or perfect as a dinner with Kraftwerk. Doesn't matter, just make it as noone did before... I know Dave'n'Crew can make it special, deep, powerfull and "musical"... and if only Dave Rossum with all his sampling knowledge and Assimil8or project could jump in...

Tempest is killer in terms of "playability", "hidden_experimental_potential", "modularity with its mod matrix"... etc... Love love love... 2 things are really missed in my opinion >>> tools for ITB sound shaping (like digital efx, reverbs/delayz, per instrument/voice eq/ etc. ) and sampling...

Sequential, come on! Make the Synth World great again!
Just because you kan! : )

P/S: The T. is still rockin' super hard... Never used it as a drum machine but basically the most powerful analog groove station existed...

Roger Linn said Dave has likely little interest in doing another drum machine.

The market is also saturated with grooveboxes/drum machines now.

No need to call it a groovebox or drum machine..May i remind you that many people love and use T as a poly synth..
Why not built a hybrid analog/digital machine that’s capable of finishing complete tracks including mix/mastering..A complete hybrid workstation!
We’re in 2021 come on!
Imagine a combo of some Prophet analog OSCs/filters working side by side with a digital modular environment like on Nord Modular G2 and finalising all that through a quality master chain of effects with audio analysis tools included (don’t forget the touchscreen for convenience!)
The best of every world!
Now that would be a revolutionary machine!

Yes yes and yes!

Machine for "complete" production - yes!

We are not talking about new Madonna album or something with 100 tracks and SSL channel strips, but experimental "groove" / "minimalistic" approach, something you can program, then perform live with it, experiment, go deep and discover new sounds.

Despite market is "saturated with grooveboxes / drum machines", there's very little really "pro" choices, with no compromises on sound and really unique features and deep "open" synthesis. Tempest is definitely one of them, with all its limitations and bugs.

It's quite important to inspire musicians and open "new horizons".

The feeling of "now everything is possible" is very important.

When Tempest was announced it was really a "H*%$F*#(!" effect. Nothing else around was as inspiring and serious on features at that time. I was really excited and still keep some of this excitement till now.

I used and use lot of other things like Elektron / Roland / some boutique and modular things, but I'm not sure if something as interesting and "complete" as Tempest showed up ever since, most of the tools are "marketing oriented" and feels like made for Kindergardens, to make mediocre stuff.

Probably only in modular and software worlds there are some breakthroughs, but still it lacks this "complete solution", "hands on" design. I'm talking about something like MPC was for hip hop in 90s - a "sonic canvas", so here same idea but for modern "experimental" approach, still with top notch sound, analog/digital hybrid generation.

I also really like what Dave Rossum made with his resent Assimil8or module. I tried to contact him and wrote many times that this is a brilliant sampler and if it completed with analog filters / effects / sequencer / memory, it could be that "holy grail" of modern grove station / instrument / call it whatever.

So, yeah... I don't think Sequential has to stop here...

If innovation is what you seek then it's best to wait on Roger Linn's new drum machine.

Can’t wait for that to drop :P

Tempest with...

- Users samples and a better sample engine
- Proper MIDI implementation (CCs for modulation, sequence each voice as a monosynth)
- More CV ins

...that would do me. In fact, any two of the three would probably do me. I don't really care about composing tracks or FX.

Regardless, I still love mine.

Roger Linn still keeps silence about his new machine... I've seen some sketches and he mention it in his interviews, but nothing more than that...

Well... All things are clear as a day:

Take Tempest, add

+ sample loading with ENOUGH memory ( RAM + also space for sequencer data etc... )
+ digital effects per sound / voice and better parameter sequencing
+ master delay / reverb
+ better midi implementation + cv i/o

Almost all this is already implemented with Prophet X, why don't just merge T + X = ???

Yep I’ve said this many times and I’m guessing they’ve been working on something new but before they proceed have to share knowledge and resources with new management Focusrite (plugins/OS merge maybe?)
Things kinda make sense after this move and Sequential wants to get this right ::)

Hehe... this sounds pretty tasty.

Agreed.

It's like the old saying goes, no one ever appreciates what they have until it's gone. It's too bad that even on this forum the chorus of the vocal monitory will step in to drown out anything positive said or hope given towards a successor. Perhaps that will change when folks start to fully realize what the market is like without it... There's absolutely nothing that even remotely touches the Tempest.

P.S. No offense to Roger, but I'm just not interested in an all digital machine. Nor am I interested in anything lacking in synth capabilities.

Pym has already addressed this. Incorporating the PX technology into a drum machine would be a nightmare.

Tempest is the ultimate live performance drum machine. I’d love to see it with sequencer enhancements in the realm of  individual part lengths, probability, parameter randomization, note randomization within a key, etc. Essentially, I’d want any successor to retain the live performance and live beat recording while being able to dial in subtle or not so subtle amounts of variance to keep things interesting. To make a 1 bar loop not sound repetitive. Quick to lay down then easy to give it evolving interest and movement. Borrow some tricks from the Rytm, Model:Cycles and Medusa.

As far as Linn’s efforts... I trust that guy’s design instincts and really look forward to what he’s got brewing. I’d be fine with digital synthesis, but for me, it’s got to be about instinctual human interaction with the shaping of percussive sounds... all recordable of course. Also, sophisticated and artistic control of dialing in evolving aspects to the sounds and rhythms would be highly desirable.

Sounds like that's exactly what Roger is doing as his drum machine is all MPE based inspired by his Linnstrument design.

Really? Why so?
If there's a link to this statement I would appreciate if you share.

I remember Dave told in one of his i-views after the PX release: "It would be fun to make a drum machine based on PX technology".
