Pro3 MIDI Sequencing other Gear

Pro3 MIDI Sequencing other Gear
« on: May 07, 2020, 05:54:05 AM »
Hi all,

Am I right in thinking that the tracks in the Pro3's sequencer can be used to sequence other gear via MIDI? The manual suggests as much (in the list of modulation destinations, for example, although I must confess that I haven't read every word of the manual), and the presence of two MIDI outs would also support this conclusion. I've also convinced myself that Dave said something to this effect in one of the NAMM videos.

Sorry if this topic has come up before, but it's actually kind of a deal-breaker for me.

Thanks!

On the upper sequencer tracks (4-16) you can set the Destination to output to CV outs or one of the MIDI out ports / channels.

The sequencer doesn't currently output the track 1-3 to MIDI out (Note, Duration, Ratchet).   Those three are for internal sequencing only...  though it has been asked as a feature request to have an option to output the combined 1-3 track data to MIDI out - It would be a very valuable option for recording into a DAW for further manipulation of sequences, or could be used for controlling ext gear / layering.

You can copy the data you have in Track 1 (internal note sequence) to one of the upper tracks (#5 for instance), and then set the track 5 to have a destination of MIDI Note Out...  It doesn't copy the note duration and ratchet info however.

Also worth noting here is that you can set the Note Mode to Off (holding down track select, clicking track 1, then clicking the Notes On/Off toggle in the soft window)   This can be used to disable the internal sequence of notes to the program, and then the upper tracks (4-16) act as just a gated sequencer / parameter sequencer.

Thanks for the reply.

Does that mean that Track 4, for example, can be sent to Midi Note Out through Midi Out 1, and Track 5 to Midi Note Out through Midi Out 2, thus sequencing two external monophonic synths?

Yes, that is correct... you can simultaneously control note sequences of external synthesizers from both MIDI OUT ports using the upper tracks (4-16).

Since you can target the destination channel as well as the port, you could theoretically control note sequences of up to 13 different external synths daisy chained with different MIDI channels set for each device.

I do have a question about the CC parameter sequencing... just noticed there's a discrepancy with the manual, and not sure if CC destinations are working correctly, or if I'm just doing something wrong.  Will send a support ticket.

That's what I thought! Thanks for the info! As for sequencing up to 13 synths via midi, even if I had that many, I can't really see the practicality of doing so, as it would take away the ability to automate other parameters on the Pro 3 via the sequencer. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Thanks again!

Update 1.0.3.26 adds the ability for the Internal Sequencer (Tracks 1-3) to be output via MIDI/USB as well.    Set Globals > MIDI > MIDI ARP/SEQ NOTES to ON.

Awesome!   It bakes in and transmits the Note Ratcheting as well, so you can jump around between track sequences and capture all the note ratchet repeats in your DAW, or send to an external MIDI device for layering with internal program sequence... Just testing this out - works great!      Thanks Seq team!

Now if we could just get a global ratcheting offset as a mod destination... ;)  Would allow for some crazy Aphex Twin style effects mapped to slider, mod wheel, lfos, etc...

Hi I am considering getting a Pro 3 and had the same question about the Sequencer. Can you use the Seq to trigger other hardware/soft synths? Any limitations I should be aware of? thanks!
