Sharp clipping sound when turning Pro 3 off?

Sharp clipping sound when turning Pro 3 off?
« on: March 25, 2020, 05:53:03 PM »
Is anyone else getting this when they turn off their Pro 3?  Mine makes a really loud popping digital noise, just curious if this is the norm or not.

Yes.

But how can you tell it’s digital? Sounds punchy analog to me.  ;D

I get the normal sort of pop , but not like digital distortion / clipping.

I noticed it upon turning on the Pro 3 as well.  But I turned my monitors off before I turned the Pro 3 off last night so I can’t say about the loud pop on turning off.  What a bad ass synth though!  Endless inspiration this one.  Snap crackle pop

I did some more testing and mine is pretty quite. Switching on doesn’t seem to make a noise , and switching off rarely does.

My Pro 3 also produces a terrible noise (zapp/buzz/popp) by switching the unit on and off. It is so loud that it clips the input of my MIDAS Venice console and I m not running it hot at all.
I really need a solution as this level of noise can seriously damage parts of your gear and it is also very annoying in live situations.

Should I send the unit back to replace the power supply unit or can this be solved in a software update?

Sequential support told me it’s just the way it works and advised me to turn speakers off first. They said there’s circuitry to protect against a pop on start up but that couldn’t be done for power off due to the state of the unit being unknown. I don’t know what that means exactly but it’s definitely a con and none of my other synths pop—or at least not this loudly.

Again not a problem for me...simply turn off your monitors first...

That’s fine if you’re wrapping up recording or a show. But sometimes you’re just done with the synth, want to keep recording, and want to conserve energy. But you have to remember that this one behaves differently than your other units, including ones from Sequential. Not to mention there’s always a risk that the synth gets turned off accidentally while speakers remain on—short, brown our, tripping over cables, careless cats, etc.

I totally agree with you.
In live shows there are sometimes a lot of hands involved and you don't want an instrument that behaves different than all others.

Wouldn’t something like this be more of an inherent design of the hardware (unintentional of course) rather than an issue that could be fixed in a software update?  Sequential hasn’t commented on the behavior since it’s been mentioned.

Presumably. With effects pedals I believe there are usually resistors or CV ramp functions or something. But I have no idea if the same would apply to synths.

That is exactly what I am afraid too... But for me it would be already ok to know if the people from sequential are aware of it and try to find a solution. Even hardware based.
I mean they had to provide a new set of encoders/pots for the Prophet 08 these daysbecause the first ones were pretty wack.
So maybe they could provide us a new designed psu. I woul even pay for it. No question...

I stand corrected, mine does do this, but not all the time. Annoying to have to remember to turn your monitors down every time you want just the synth off if you are using other equipment, would be a pita live I imagine.

i wonder if there is a cv out that could be used to bleed off some capacitive juice, as that is what the noise reminds me of.

The volume of the pop seems to depend on the active patch

I really have to say that mine is doing this every time I switch the unit on or off. Just made some tests today. It s a horrible noise, every time a bit different.

I would never turn any of my equipment on (or off) without the monitors or amps off.  It’s a simple thing....your monitors (or amp) are the last thing you turn on and the first thing you turn off.  It’ll never pop.
