MIDI DIN is still good in many regards.
MIDI 2.0 won't support 5 pin DIN, at least not initially, only USB
MIDI over IP will be MMA's 2nd priority.
Some thoughts on potential consequences:
1. Reduced cable lengths to synth (USB 1.1 beyond 5m becomes erratic).
In case Synth USB port uses a USB 2.0 or 3.0 mode even much shorter ( ~ 1m for 3.0/3.1)
USB signal repeaters ?
2. No more MIDI THRU.
Unless synth support a USB connector and supports something like "USB MIDI Thru" between the two.
3. No more hooking up multiple synths via MIDI DIN to one USB cable using a MIDI interface
Replacement: use a USB Hub . There are devices that don't play nice with USB hubs,
Solution: Adding a bunch of PCI USB cards in desktops ? That is a no go for notebooks.
4. Need to change my avatar.
No way.
Would Sequential embrace MIDI 2.0 ?
