Single-Synthesizer Challenge: Single-Track Version
« on: September 24, 2019, 07:54:00 AM »
This thread is for single-track recordings of any length and complexity made with a single synthesizer.

- Any brand or model can be used, monophonic or polyphonic
- Only one instrument can be used, although multiple units of the identical synthesizer can be linked together
- The recordings must be made with a single track, from one keyboard and panel
- External and onboard effects can be used
- Each synthesist can contribute any number of recordings
- This is not a competition, but a friendly sharing

Doepfer Dark Energy- which is a little mono synth.  Controlled by a Linn 128 controller.  Styman BigSky plate reverb.
Not  much of a song to speak of- but it's about the longest I can play without making a mistake  :)

Made with Poly Evolver Rack... a single preset, taken in one go, with a heavy dose of realtime modulation. FX unit is a Lexicon MX400. Some will find this to be serious noise, but it shows some capabilities of the PE that is not often heard I guess.

I really liked that, better even than some of the multitrack experiments. Very musical, despite the noise-y character. How much is the filter versus moving between oscillators?
Prophet 12, Modal 002, MFB Dominion 1, Behringer DeepMind 12D, Korg Polysix & EX-8000, Roland JX-8P, Ensoniq SQ-80, Kawai K3m and now an OB-6!

Filter is heavily modulated, but actually a lot was modulated, not just the filter... I used both aftertouch, modwheel, pitchwheel plus both Distortion, AM and FM... It was basically one big chaotic modulation preset... I think I actually still have the preset somewhere on my computer.

I found this to be worth repeated listens.  If it demonstrates the synth's capabilities, that's secondary-- which is good.  Noise or not, there's a musicality to it.

I played around with this patch for about a month. The performance is on a Tetrapad, and the oscillators are a pair of Make Noise STOs.

That is a fine little piece of music - simple, somber, and reflective.

A quick (literally) spin-off of Marc Charpentier's prelude to the Te Deum (also known as the Eurovision theme).
I might as well post it here...

Decided to record myself doing some sloppy improv after finding some nice chords and a (stock  :-[) patch to suit. Recorded with my MoTet. In some spots I'm out of time with myself, and in others you can almost hear the cogs turning in my brain. Nevertheless, I'm kinda happy with it. :)

will.taylor,   I learned that making yourself happy with it is the most important step.  What's the instrument?

I recorded that track by polychaining a Mopho Keyboard + Tetra together. It was mostly for me to practice my keyboard skills and improvisation.

I pushed out some interesting textures and sonic effects with the Tetra today, which has recently been keeping me company at my desk, serving as a boredom-buster on my days off.

The patch was made in combo mode, but I only used two voices with almost identical parameters for some layering. I wanted to keep a clean sound while I added audio modulation over the top. I absolutely love squeezing functionality out of the sequencer and mod matrix. After all this time it's still a bit mind-boggling to me that this can sound 99% the same on a mopho.

The part of the patch I'm most happy with is the wailing I created by mixing a healthy ratio of filter settings, some noise and a bit of audio mod. This comes in around the end of the piece.

In future, I would probably make more dramatic variations to the sound while recording, since I find it a bit boring and repetitive right now. I'd be curious to hear other opinions though. :)

With Shout Factory releasing that awesome Friday The 13th Boxset (Which I preordered of course) I went back and started listening to some of the soundtracks of the later films. While Harry Manfredini's frantic score is better known of some of the later synth works by Fred Mollin are quite impressive. Fred Mollin did the synth work on Part 7, the entire score for Part 8 and even scored the F13 series. He also scored the series "First Knight" as well. His tool of the trade? The Kurzweil K250.

While in the studio last week I tried my hand at programming some "Mollin-esq" patches on my Sequential Prophet X.  This is all done in a single take. No overdubs in split mode. Nothing fancy just a quick que.

Some female vocals saying the word "Resurrected" (symbolizing Tina resurrecting Jason) with some tubular bells being hit with mallets and some filter sweeps on the low square waves on one side of the split.
The other side of the split has some strings symbolizing the delicate parts of Tina's scenes and some heavy Simmons esq percussion hits symbolizing the ever approaching Jason Voorhees.

And just like the 80s....there is chorus on EVERYTHING lol

I am seriously considering the new Kurzweil PC4 but really do wish Kurzweil would come out with a module version of their sounds. If I do manage to go that route, you can sure bet you'll hear some more Fred Mollin style stuff on this channel.

Enjoy! Ki ki ki Ma ma ma
