Random knob twisting + software
« on: August 16, 2019, 06:00:21 AM »
Because there's not enough random knob twisting featuring Prophet Rev2 on youtube yet.

FWIW what you hear is pure Prophet Rev2: no external effects or equalization are used.

All parameters are visualized in real-time using free open source software written in supercollider so you can rebuild the same patch at any moment in time by just pausing the video and copying the values into your synth! This uses the same code base I used to create the "free book disassembling the rev2 presets".

Normally both layers are visualized side by side, but since I used only layer A in this video, I cut out the B-side and used the extra space to show a video where you see me actually twisting the knobs. The only thing you cannot see on the video is the very first thing I do: that is pressing the "hold" button.

While not demonstrated in the video, this same software offers some other features going beyond what typical sound editors offer (e.g. it has a software-based 16-voice polyphonic sequencer which can also automate any parameter on the synth (and it performs automatic linear interpolation between states if desired)... like a marriage between gated and poly sequencer on steroids). In contrast to other sound editors, it doesn't offer some basic stuff like patch librarian functionality, so don't ditch your other editors ;)

It's very much pre-alpha quality, as in: it doesn't look very attractive, and it probably works only for me (only tested on linux of all things!) at the moment, but if you are tech savvy and think you need this software too, feel free to help me make it better by testing and logging/fixing bugs or creating additional features. As supercollider is a cross-platform environment, in principle it should be possible to make it work almost anywhere.
