And who is that person that will love DSI for it?  ;D ... Yeah... I will... I guess... though I've forgotten about P12 for the moment, as I've found a MIDI bug on Sub37 now... AAAARGH!  :(

There are still bugs in the Voyager so I'm not surprised.

Logically (maybe) it will be at NAMM.

New owner of a P12 module here...just updated to 1.2.26 and was wondering if anyone has written up a step-by-step guide to implementing the 4 operator FM now possible? I read somewhere that 1.2.26 will allow FM a la the old Yamaha DX9 (which was limited to 4 operators vs the DX7) and I've searched through a few forums and read the release notes in the OS but can't find anything that clicks for me.

Thanks

Oscillator Level page, 4th encoder chooses between Exponential and Linear. Set it to Linear.

P.S. It's not quite like the DX series as they use Phase modulation where the P12 uses Frequency modulation so it doesn't sound quite the same. I have included an example patch using linear FM that you might want to look at to see how things can be set up. It uses both layers and the FM envelopes are set up in the modulation slots. It will load in U1-P29.

Fantastic, I'll check out your patch...

I'm very excited about this. I'd love to hear some audio demos of what its linear FM patches sound like.

Programming FM sounds is always challenging and is heavily dependent on minute changes in the amount of modulation, whether it's the amount modulating oscillators affect the carriers, the amount the envelopes affect either, or how much velocity affects things like the amount the modulator modulates the carrier or the decay rate of the modulator's envelope.

I feel that the importance of envelopes is often discounted when it comes to Lin. FM. One of my favorite features of the DX7 is that instead of a common ADSR envelope, it had independent amounts for each stage of the envelope as well as settings for the rates at which it would reach the peak amount of each stage.

At any rate, I'm genuinely excited about the possibilities of linear FM on this beast!! I can't wait to hear it in the context of some music.

When these bug fixes, updates, and features are finally completed, I'm going to take another good long look at the Prophet 12.  Hopefully, my patience will be rewarded, because I sure would like a synthesizer the size of the P12.  This instrument has come a  long ways since its first release.  Its present form could almost be called a Prophet 12 Rev. 2.

This instrument has come a  long ways since its first release.

There have been made some changes, yes. But by far the largest change is the improvement in Prophet 12 owners sound design skills. The instrument still have its have its original overall digital tone from its digital oscillator section so nothing have changed on that front. But with the addition of the Linear FM feature new types of sounds are possible. Oh and the digital delays have improved significantly with the addition of filters and pan. Hope to see that in a future DSI instrument that I like and can afford.

Look forward to hear your thoughts after working with the Prophet 12 for some time.

Hey, thanks Bob - that's a very nice-sounding program  8)

I created these patches with the latest beta OS, a few of the patches have been programmed with the Linear FM

Possible reasons for Audio Out modulation source not working yet:
(1) Coding or build error at DSI.
(2) DSI tester confirms a false positive so that its not working but are said to do so.
(3) Customers not using it correctly.

Easiest way to tell which one: DSI and customers posts patches demonstrating the feature along with a description of the patches expected behavior. Be sure to review each others work in the process!

Well it's not 3.

Quite - you can try routing Audio Mod to any of its available destinations, and it still does absolutely nothing :(

Surely if there were a problem implementing Audio Mod as a source in 1.3, then DSI would have removed it as an option rather rather than leaving it in as a dummy entry  :-\
