Instrument Limit
« on: April 29, 2019, 03:18:04 PM »
Anyone know how many “instruments” you can put in 1 category (for example, “Synths”) of a sample pack?  I’m thinking of sampling my Prophet 12, but it is such a deep instrument... I’m afraid I’ll run out of allotted numbers.

Thanks in advance for anyone who may know.

You should be able to haveup to 98 instruments in each of the 17 categories.

I was thinking it would be 98 or 99.
Thanks for the quick response!

Yeah, slot 1 is empty on purpose. So, slots 2 through 99 are available.

It just happened that I got on my computer and decided to check the forum right after you posted.

Why is slot 1 empty - probably obvious but the purpose isn't clear to me!

Think of the blank slot 1 as representing "no instrument/sample selected." I'd guess that it was done that way for implementation simplification.

Is there a limit for how many instruments/sample sets can be imported at a time? I have 30 on a 3.0 USB Thumb Drive and despite the machine reporting a successful import, only 10 of them show up in the sample playback selection screen. This Prophet XL has been a plague on me since it arrived.
I've told you before, Ryan. If one makes it, it's a victory.

I've imported as many as 44 at once with no issues.  Are you sure you are looking for them where you put them?

I think I got it. I have to export from the utility onto the thumb drive so that it knows how to number each sample set, otherwise they all go into slot 02. Certainly a no-no to edit file names after export. But why oh why in the prophet's sweet holy name does the 8dio utility not remember the Sound Set text after loading a project file (.sgrp)? I hope I survive this.

I export mine to a folder on my hard drive, then to a USB drive... in case I want to make changes, or have backups.

You should try the PXToolkit -- It is currently far superior to 8dio's utility.

As you’ve found out the hard way, the Prophet X will replace one instrument with another whenever their Bank, Category, and Index # are identical.  It really is critical to keep those numbers distinct (at least within each combination of bank and category.)

I have released a utility to safely renumber an instrument after the fact, but it’s currently command-line only.  If you’re comfortable with the macOS Terminal or Windows command shell you can download it here.  I really should build a proper user interface around that some day.

... and of course if we can sort out why PXToolkit doesn’t like the .wav file you ran into problems with, you’ll find it has a very different approach to generating index numbers.  It will recommend the next number for the target directory, but you can choose any valid number you like (and it will warn you if your choice overlaps with another file in the same directory.)  Your choice is saved into a .pxinstrument file along with everything else.

Have you had any luck uploading the problematic .wav?
