rev2 oscillator drop-out (redux) [SOLVED]

rev2 oscillator drop-out (redux) [SOLVED]
« on: February 02, 2019, 11:12:09 PM »
hey guys, earlier today I posted about a mysterious thing that crept in to my Rev 2 earlier today, where basically I can't play the instrument because half of my keys are non-responsive.  That post is copied below but I'll now delete it (it didn't get any replies).

I think I have narrowed the problem, and I think I'm seeing what people reported a few times last year, with oscillators dropping out in certain (beta) versions of the OS.  Basically, my oscillators act unreliably.  For instance:
- The tuning knobs skip over various notes, sometimes the better part of an octave
- almost any patch, chunks of keys stop responding, though if I go back to the same key a few seconds later, it may respond.

Here's the video again:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7xsX4X2u44&feature=youtu.be

I have re-installed both 1.1.4.27 and 1.1.4.5 (I happened to have that on my computer) a few times, including global settings reset and calibration, but I am still seeing the problem.

Now what?

Thanks!

Hi guys, I have a Rev2 that I bought new about a year ago. It's been working great. I think I most recently updated it in the Fall, I think to that October OS update.

This morning I decided to install the Prophet 08 sound banks. After I did that, I noticed that blank patches and other keys were not responsive, so without thinking too much about it, I downloaded the Rev 2 default banks and re-installed those. Still using a USB cable and SysEx Librarian. Same thing. Then I tried resetting the Global variables. Same thing. Then just now, I installed the latest beta of the Rev2 OS, the build from January. Still the same.

Here's what I'm getting:
- Blank patch: about an octave of keys works, then the next octave doesn't create any sounds, etc
- Factory patches: a few work normally, most have spots where the keyboard isn't responsive
- Sometimes I notice I hit a key and nothing happens, then I hit it again a few seconds later and it works. Almost like there's an envelope or LFO getting in the way.

Video showing the issue in action: https://youtu.be/r7xsX4X2u44 - at the end of the video i pan over some of my keys so you can see some of the knob settings there.

What I've tried:
- restarting the rev2 a few times
- updating / resetting the OS and banks, per comments above
- unplugging the USB midi cable
- turning off various Midi settings
- playing around with VCA and LFO knobs, in case one of them was causing the problem

I'm out of ideas!

I don't think this is a defective machine. But something got weird!!

1/ there's no complete Factory Reset option, right?
2/ other suggestions?

Much thanks!

The best advice I can give you is to get in touch with Sequential support team, by writing them or phoning them.
Minimoog D (vintage), OB6 (Desktop), Oberheim Matrix-6 (MIDI Controller), Prophet REV2-16, DeepMind 12

Sorta seems like your Rev board is now thinking its a Prophet 08 with only 8 voices available.   Maybe you sent the P08 operating system by accident when you were trying to send P08 patches.   Not sure if that's even possible?

But at any rate, contact DSI/SEQ official support... they're quick with responses and will get you sorted.

I'm not sure I am right about this, but this could be because of scrambled preset memory perhaps... Have you loaded any presets into the machine?

If the presets you play in the video are factory ones, they could be rewritten via the service menu.

Have you tried to initialize the current sound by holding both transpose buttons and hold button down, and checked if that changes this behavior? If that makes the synth work, then I believe a scrambled preset memory could be the problem

The REV2 can actually damage preset memory, if you dump preset banks too fast, especially with high speed USB... I have witnessed this myself, though I only got Layer B scrambled sounds... It may be that you sent the 08 bank way too fast, and also the factory banks you tried to load back in after that... I would try sending the banks again with MIDIOX as this program has delays between the individual sounds in the bank file... You need at least 32ms between, otherwise the REV2 will choke in the process and completely scramble the presets... MIDIOX has a big enough delay with its default installation. It may be that an even larger delay is needed with a P08 bank because this is different to a REV2 bank and may have to be processed in a conversion algorithm as well, extending the required delay between the individual presets... Remember that a bank file is not just one big message, it consists of 128 small individual preset messages, and you have to have this delay between sending them.

hi guys, super appreciate all the advice!! I think the prophet 8/8 voices thing sounds logical, as does the USB transfer speed thing. Tried all the advice above (another upload of the default programs, this time at a slower speed, another recalibrate). Also checked that I never uploaded a Prophet 08 OS (just the programs).  Don't know what the Service menu is, guessing that's a hidden menu tech support may give me access to.  In any case, per the advice, I will now contact tech support. MUCH THANKS.

Service menu is entered by holding down the two transpose buttons, and pressing "global" ... but be aware that there are functions in there that may erase stuff etc... so yes... contact support, it may be that your REV2 is broken because of how it reacts... it is rather strange behavior

Well, guys, this is pretty embarrassing.

Just heard back from support. Andy asked me to make sure to check that I was connected to my MAIN outs, not my B outputs.  UHHHM, that was the problem.  :)

Case closed.

I've never experienced anything like that  8) I once heard strange things as well, turned out one of my cables was not connected anymore. The longer your signal path, the more possible causes for problems.
