Sound similar than IWTBF

Sound similar than IWTBF
« on: January 30, 2019, 11:55:16 AM »
Hello,

I'm trying to have a sound similar that the solo in "I Want To Break Free" from Queen... with my REV2, but my programming is very beginner, and the result is disaster...

Who can help me?

Also... why not to create a chapiter to exchange the sounds between us on this forum, with sysEx files?

It seems that it was done on a Jupiter 8... and the character of that solo does in no way resemble what I know my REV2 being able to reproduce... it may get close if you knew exactly how the preset was made, but I doubt it would ever sound the same completely :) ... and without knowing exactly what settings the JP8 is set at, it could be rather tough to replicate it.
If you need me, follow the shadows...

Yes I know was with JP8   ;)
but if someone is more talented than me to get to find a similar sound, I'm interested   ;D

I have a patch in the banks I'm working on... made it a while back, but as I recall, it was passable for IWTBF.   Will check tonight and see.

As I recall, a snappy unison brass setup with long glide and some delay.

I made this patch a couple years back, loosely inspired by the "I Want to Break Free" solo sound..   I didn't really tone match it, as I was just trying to create a general purpose lead tone for my projects... it could use some refinement for IWTBF, but maybe you can use it as a starting point.

Attached is a single program SYX file for the patch.   I use SoundTower editor for saving/loading singles... you can load single presets easily in there... not sure how to load singles via general sysex.

Thank you creativespiral

I'll try one REV2 this weekend.

My goal is not to find exactly 100% the same, but to have a similar spirit of sound, you given me a very good base.

I'm also a user of SoundTower editor. But for the moment mainly to organize the presets.
I'm too much in the inunderstanding of bases of analog sound and I have few experience but I know I'll finshed by understand the things...
My mainly inunderstanding is still how we can change the timbre of sound (organ sound, bells, strings, flute... etc)

Oh, forgot to mention, the mod wheel is set to do a one octave pitch dive on all oscillators... which can be used for the last note in the phrase.   The pitch wheel is set for 2 semitone range, and most of the bends in the solo are around 1 semitone, except for the long F# which is 2 semitone bend...   getting the pitch bends right is really vital to this sort of solo sound...  I did several takes to record that soundcloud demo last night, but my playing / bends are a bit sloppy.

Also, if you want, you can set Pressure to modulate ALL OSC FREQ by a value of 2, and then use aftertouch/pressure for all the one semitone bends, and the pitch wheel for the larger bends.   Just make sure to do it for both layers if you want it to behave like that.

I can tell you generally how to approach getting that sound.

The sound is emulating a guitar solo.  I remember in the day learning how to play the synth like a guitar player would play a guitar.   It is within that style.  You will have to learn that style of playing to effectively emulate that sound.  A lot of times, it is not so much getting the sound exactly right.  It is approaching the performance the right way.  This is one of those situations.

Programming - It is going to be a guitar like sound but the envelope for the VCF is going to have a somewhat slow attack.  That's what gives it the "whah" sound on the attack.  The ocscs will not be detuned.  You will sync the ocscs together to get that kind of mid-rangy sound like a guitar string.  Probably some resonance, but not much.  I would start with square waves and see where it goes.

There is tube distortion on the sound.  Back in those days, it was common to run the synth through a guitar amp and get the distortion that way.   There are also reverb and echo effects present.

Hope this helps.

I did a quick patch to demonstrate the above.  Not exactly the original sound - but close.  With work i could dial it in closer.  This is done on a P-08.  Rev 2 would be identical.

Had a bit of time today and worked my patch a bit more to make it more specific to the IWTBF tone:
