FX Slider assigned to Sound Roll (Not Beat Roll)

In the original Tempest intro videos by Dave and Roger, there are times when they are using the FX slider to initiate a drum roll.  For example, Dave does it with the FX2 slider at 2:40 in the below video.  He's not in 16 Beats mode, he's in 16 Sounds mode and it appears the roll is only on the snare.  So, it's not a beat roll.  How do you do this?  There is no "Sound Roll" destination for Note FX like there is a "Beat Roll" destination for the Beat FX.  I thought maybe you would have to assign the slider to a Mod destination and then assign Mod1, for example, to note number or velocity, etc.  Is it an LFO?  Can't figure it out although Dave and Roger both highlight that you can assign the sliders to drum rolls (again, not beat rolls) in the demo videos.  Any ideas?  Thanks.
