free book disassembling the rev2 presets

Thanks a bunch for this! I got myself a rev2 a week ago and was really having a hard time getting into it, propably because I'm so used to my Peak. I was about to give up but then I found this and recreated 3 programs while reading the manual on every parameter I was changing. Today I created 3 totally different sounding patches (they even sounded more or less as planned)and I'm really starting to love this synth! One question: In some programs the filter env amount is set to zero without an lfo or any other source opening it up, while for example, the filter env attack is set to a value. Why is this? Does this still have some effect? Or does key amount activate the filter env? Or are these errors in your book? Thanks Again for the work you have put in this, it's been a great help!

I'm afraid I'm not the best person to answer the question in depth. If you start from a basic patch, then reduce the cut-off frequency until you get a somewhat muffled sound, you can turn the env amount button and hear the influence it has on the tone. By playing with the velocity knob you can make the filter open more as you play louder. Key amount is more about making the filter open more as you play higher notes. By adjusting the env amount you can regulate more the overall level. I think of the env amount as a kind of "gain" for the filter envelope if that makes any sense. By making the env amount negative, you flip the filter envelope upside down. Not claiming that my insights are 100% correct or >1% illuminating. When it comes to sound design, I'm really a total n00b. I've made the book as an aid in my quest for insight, but I've noticed I tend to prefer playing, composing and improvising over sound design, so I haven't really made enough progress in that area yet. Some day I'm sure I'll get to it ;)

Or are these errors in your book?

That's possible too of course! You can easily verify it for yourself by selecting the patch you are examining, then turn the knob you want to know the preset value of, then press the "compare" button. The preset number should appear when the compare button is activated and display the currently configured value again when you deactivate the compare button.

If you do find errors, please be sure to report them.
It's a lot of information to proof-read for occasional errors :)

Thanks Again for the work you have put in this, it's been a great help!

You're welcome! I wish I could complement it with deep insights about sound design, but I haven't reached that level (or any level, really) of proficiency yet.

Most likely I'm being brain-dead... but I can't figure out how to download the book. Clicking on the 0.0.5 link doesn't appear to do anything. This is what I see...

Yes it's somewhat non-intuitive: on the screen you see, click the "source code (zip)" link. Inside the .zip file you'll find the .pdf file.

Without certainty, this might well be intentional programming, so that when playing the patch you could introduce the already programmed envelope to affect the filter, by using the env amount knob, to accentuate live playing for instance. Just like using the pitch and mod wheels.

Awesome job!

I got my Rev 2 today, understood the first few presets, then go blown away by the complexity of so many of them. I'm going to learn so much from reading this. Thank you!!

It seems to be an incredible corrective work ! But I have 3 questions of noobs :

1•The last Official firmware for REV2 8 is correct or is your big work still actual?

2•to beneficiate to all your corrective patchwork, all download and the latest one or the latest contains all and is a combo ? (Logic, but the history describes just New actions of New

3•when you correctiv patch is definitfly installed , te official latest firmware of REV 2 8 erases It or not ?

I do not fully understand all your questions, but I can say this: the presets in the synth typically don't change between firmware revisions, so the book should still be correct. The latest available version of the book contains everything, no need to download multiple versions. There's nothing to install in the .zip file, only a .pdf file to read. You can use the information in the .pdf file to manually recreate your favourite preset patches using the front-panel buttons.

Incredibly useful, thank you. 8)
Searching on certain parameters like mod matrix stuff to learn how they are used is very helpful.

Hi all,

Let's be honest: Rev2 is a monster. And monsters can be hard to tame.

Factory presets show a lot of what can be accomplished using the synth, but understanding exactly how/why they work is a challenge. Yes, I'm aware of the "compare" button and several software interfaces but in real vintage style (I didn't get an *analog* synth for nothing, right?) I felt the need to have a book.

So I sat down and made one, reusing, amongst other things, some formidable work done by DSI forum users Razmo and Gerry Havinga. And you, dear reader, get to download and read it entirely for free! Officially the best known way to explore your synthesizer in bed! It shouldn't come as a surprise that the book turns out to be a monster too, counting way over 1000 pages (don't print this at home, folks ::) !).

Since this is a first version of the book, it may have flaws, critical omissions, etc. If you happen to find such errors or  omissions, please be so kind as to report an issue to me, as described in the first pages of the book, on https://github.com/shimpe/sc-prophet-rev2 This is also the web address where you can suggest code changes or spec sheet template changes.

This book will always remain free under a creative commons license. Future updates to the book - if any - will be announced in this thread.

Note that the software I created to make this book is available for download too, and it allows you to automagically create similar sheets for your own REV2 patches, but at the moment it's not (at all!) user friendly - i.e. probably usable for hardcore tech nerds only (and unfortunately I have deadlines for other projects which means this situation will not change any time soon). If you do try and use it however, but get stuck, be sure to reach out, and I'll make a reasonable effort to help you figure things out.

In the mean time, I hope you will find the book as intriguing as I do!
For your convienience here's the download link: https://github.com/shimpe/rev2/releases

Enjoy!

Is there any chance that one of our SuperCollider-literate members might be able to produce the "bare" output of the code without the PDF layout, for example in a CSV?

If you could provide a detailed example of what you expect as result, I probably should be able to create what you want.

It's been almost 4 years since I've created this book. Recently I found a typo in the code that generates the book and which leads to wrong values for Aux Env amount on layer B in case of negative values. To celebrate the new year, a new version of the book correcting this mistake has been uploaded.

To get the new version of the book you can click the download source code (zip) link for version 0.0.6 on https://github.com/shimpe/rev2/releases
