Are these patches supposed to sound like this?

Are these patches supposed to sound like this?
« on: January 22, 2016, 05:17:22 PM »
I've had my Prophet 12 since Jan 6th 2016. I've been busy configuring my studios so I haven't had much time to check it out. Although the first thing I did was install the new OS update.

Anyway I was checking out a couple of patches and noticed that some nasty distortion was happening when certain notes were played. Patches are U2 P9 Pastoral Strings and U2 P7 Electro Split. I haven't done any tweaking so they are as is. Also I notice when I turn it on first thing the outputs are quite noisy and they gradually calm down over a couple of minutes. I attached an audio file of the 2 patches. They are programmed midi parts with velocity at 127 although it happens at lower velocity. This happens in my DAW with local off and also playing the synth standalone with local on.  I've tested this on both my speakers in my headphones and it's the same. The output of the Synth was set to around 1 o'clock but the output levels doesn't seem to affect the artefacts.

Thanks
Martin

ps I just updated the OS to 1.31 and it's still happening.

No it is not meant to sound like that.

First thing to check is to try those same patches from the Factory banks, so try:

F6 - P9
F6 - P7

Are they acting the same?

Also try resetting the Globals and also autotuning the filters.

Does that help?

Thanks for replying. I tried resetting globals but it made no difference.  Some of the other patches have the same behaviour. It seems to be with sustained sounds. P13 Clean Bee is similar. It's kind of random you can play some descending notes and maybe the 4th one or 5th one will be distorted. Then you do it again a different note will oscillate. If you play from the same note which was distorted that will be clean and then maybe another note will be distorted instead. I tried messing around with filters and on a couple of patches I'm not sure it made any difference. Also I've uploaded a file to give you an idea of the output noise I get when I turn it on.

Listening to your first MP3, the fact that the distortion happens every few notes suggests to me that perhaps one of your oscillators is faulty.

Try playing these patches again but watch the 12 LED voice indicators (below the '12' logo) while you play - if the distortion happens whenever a particular LED is lit then this would confirm my suspicion.

However, since you've only had your P12 since January 6th I think you need to contact your dealer to get a replacement. THis most definitely isn't normal behaviour.

Good luck!

Yes the distortion coincides with LEDs being lit. Although as I said in the distortion is a random and not always the same note (s).

So I phoned up my retailer and the guy tried if you trouble shooting suggestions but to no avail. He's arranged to have it picked up on Monday and he will send out a replacement.

I had a very similar issue with my P12 almost two years ago. It happened when I changed patches fast and it affected just two voices, so there was some kind of issue with one of the Shark processors or similar, as each processor seems to handle two voices/leds. In my unit it made even stranger digital glitches.

Got a new board and sounds great. Don't worry, it will be fixed fast by the great people at DSI. Exchaning the board is very very easy.

That's interesting to know thank you for your input. Actually I'm in the UK so the retailers I bought it from, Anderton's have offered to exchange it.

So here's the latest update. I exchanged the synths today and the good news is the start-up output noise is not there. The not so good news is that I'm still getting the same oscillation on the patches I mentioned. If I play single note continuously and watch the 12 LEDs the distortion comes on A 1 & 6 and B 8. Although if I change to another patch and then returned to it the distortion only comes on A1 and B8. So at this point I'm somewhat flummoxed  :o Anyway I think my next step will be to phone up DSI and speak to them directly.

Yes probably a good idea!

Maybe a bad batch?

Good news I've just got off the phone from Andy at DSI support. He suggested I autotune the filters from the global menu. So he walked me through the procedure and then I power cycled the unit. Much to my delight the problem with the filter distortion has gone. Maybe I should have contacted him first although the previous unit had a definite fault due to the output noise when starting up. So I'm good to go now :-)
