Y-cable (TS/TRS) question

Y-cable (TS/TRS) question
« on: February 12, 2018, 06:05:34 AM »
Since a few weeks i'm a proud owner of a Prophet '08 desktop. I'm still exploring the synth and having a blast with it.
I also own an Elektron Analog Four which has two inputs which I can use to route other instruments thru it and make use of the internal effects.

I have multiple devices, so in order to route more than two devices thru the Analog Four, I use a Y-cable since a week.
https://www.bax-shop.co.uk/jack-jack-adapter-plugs/stagg-syc3-ps2j-e-stereo-jack-2x-jack-female-extension-cord-3m

From the prophet 08 outputs A/B I use TRS cables and they go in into the Y-cable. Then the Y-cable is going into one of the inputs of the Analog four.

Now for my question. Will this manner of routing affects the stereo sound of the Prophet 08? I have the feeling it does not affects the sound. But as the manual states, both outputs of the Prophet 08 are TRS. And in the specification of the Y-cable it says both female inputs are TS and only the male is TRS.

Can someone clarify this? And if does affects the sound of the synth, is there another way to merge the A/B so I can route it to one input of the Analog four?

Moin dropshot,

as I understand Your Y-cable, it takes two Mono signals and puts them into one Stereo output (if driven in 2 -> 1 direction) or splits a stereo input into its Mono-components (if driven in 1 -> 2 direction).
This will probably not suit Your needs: Even if You will get along with cables, You will need one Mono-Y-cable for every single line that has to be "doubled".
My personal advice however is to use a little mixer. Simple mixers with 2 stereo-inputs and one stereo output will cost You less than 50 Euros (here in Germany at least). They also drop in a headphone amp and a microphone preamp. Of course You will have to live with the knowledge that chinese kids made it for You, but this is very hard to escape in general today...

The real solution might be a more sophisticated mixer, allowing You to route different stereo or mono signals through different effects in different levels, but this is another story and You should try to learn about mixing before You select what to buy.

Go for that 50 Euros!

Thank you for the explanation, Martin. Your input got me thinking and I routed everything without the y-cables now.
I already have a more sophisticated mixer, the Soundcraft MKT 12, so now the prophet is going directly into the mixer and
I'm using the aux to route the signal to the Analog in order to make use of the effects. This works much better now! Thanks!
