Exploring FM Synthesis with the Prophet 6

Exploring FM Synthesis with the Prophet 6

I understand that with the Poly Mod section (using the Oscillator 2) can create a FM (Frequency Modulation) tones. I really want to go deep with this 6, I got it for tone but I am a sound design guy, and want to really see what this thing can do. Any suggestion for getting those heavy FM pads or bellish tones? Let's do FM!

Using Oscillator 2 as an audio rate mod source is one of my favorite things about this synth. Just explore different tunings, waveshapes and Osc 2 amount of modulation. Also remember you can get interesting timbres from sending Oscillator 2 to sources other than Oscillator 1 as well. I actually just released a sound pack of all FM patches for the prophet-6. If you wanted, you could reconstruct those patches and see different ways to build sounds. Check it out here:

nice work, shahruzm. Do you find that the polymod amount is consistent between all the voices on your p6? I'm not sure mine is consistent enough to make some of the sounds you demoed. Or maybe that's a calibration thing I should look into.

I find it is pretty consistent, but it all depends on the settings, like the oscillator frequency settings and the FM index (amount). For example, on many sounds if I have the Poly Mod Osc 2 amount set really high, it might be all over the place and inconsistent between voices. So for the sounds you hear in these patches I just had to spend time dialing everything in so it's usable.

Lots of great sounds in there.  Nice work @shahruzm!

@wbajzek - make sure to keep vintage/slop off, or at low levels, if you want more consistent polymod behavior.   Otherwise, the variance to Osc Freq can be substantial between consecutive voices.    As long as the P6 is calibrated/warmed up and vintage/slop is off, you can get really consistent results.

thanks, all. I'll play around with it again next time I have a chance. it's possible that I overdid it, or was trying it out before the instrument was warmed up. it's generally not an issue, but FM requires real precision for some of the kinds of sounds that shahruzm demonstrated.

Just wanted to share Volume 2 of the Prophet-6 FM sound bank. People really liked the first sound bank, hope this one further expands your sonic palette!
