I use VPROM from time to time (as well as my linndrum, DMX with LM-1 EPROMS,L9000 with forat LM-1 samps, etc, etc) and although VPROM is good and maybe even emulates the actual circuitry, it's still a vi...in my particular experience, I think Tempest LM-1 samps are not boring at all; they are fat and have the same kind of "flat" an original LM-1 has, especially when they flow through the Tempest signal path. I personally wouldn't describe anything that comes from an LM-1 as punchy...especially compared to the Linndrum. Somewhat subjective I realize but the reason I like working with LM-1 samps in authentically 80s style tracks is that they are indeed flat.
