LM1 Question
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:17:27 PM »
Looking at this video and playing the LM1 samples on the Tempest

https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=82s&v=TK1mK4cdd5E

Do the sounds on the Tempest (specifically the LM1 cowbell) sound different? I’m playing them now and the cowbell seems totally different.

Yeah sounds a little different to my ear too, i guess there might have been some slight post production left on from whatever track he was making or just for the videos sake, the circuitry etc also will play a part, i was also listening to the hi hat and it almosts sounds as if there is modulation on top of the hat that isn't as present when i fire off the sample in my tempest, i'm having to highpass it to even hear that modulation and the sample seems shorter as well, so it could be there is some slight compression going on bringing out the modulation so its more audible and creating the illusion that the sample is longer because its louder towards the end of the hi hat sample, either that or the samples are in fact re-recorded or something.

Yeah sounds a little different to my ear too infact the next sample name LinnCowbell sounds closer lol so i dont know really if possibly the Linn had 2 cowbell samples or something, i guess there might have been some slight post production left on from whatever track he was making or just for the videos sake, the circuitry etc also will play a part, i was also listening to the hi hat and it almosts sounds as if there is modulation on top of the hat that isn't as present when i fire off the sample in my tempest, i'm having to highpass it to even hear that modulation and the sample seems shorter as well, so it could be there is some slight compression going on bringing out the modulation so its more audible and creating the illusion that the sample is longer because its louder towards the end of the hi hat sample, either that or the samples are in fact re-recorded or something.

The cowbell sounds more like a Linn Drum cowbell sample in thr Tempest than the LM1. Even listening to stuff with the LM1 in it sounds a bit different.

The LM-1 is drastically different from what's able to reproduce by only using the samples. This video explains how the LM-1 works, and how it's reproduced with the vprom.

Makes me sad. The on board samples of the LM1 on the Tempest do sound great but it's that damn cowbell that throws me off.

Personally I think the LM-1 samples sounds incredibly boring. They get super dull when you pitch them down. A bit better when you pitch them up. However, on the real thing and on the vprom, the sounds doesn't loose punch when you pitch it up and down. The variation in the hihat pattern is also very cool on the real thing. It has its own signature. It's something else for sure. I find the Tempest much better for blending analog sounds with noise or drum samples. The LM-1 samples alone is just boring. I've been copying the minneapolis sound for a good while for fun, and find the vprom to be the only good alternative so far.

I actually think the LM-1 sounds are better than the Linn Drum personally. Most of them sound really good it's just the cowbell that puts me off but I guess I can live with that. I usually tune them a bit lower and run them through a pinch of analog distortion and lots of reverb anyway.

The LM-1 rim stick sample is missing on the Tempest, right?

I use VPROM from time to time (as well as my linndrum, DMX with LM-1 EPROMS,L9000 with forat LM-1 samps, etc, etc) and although VPROM is good and maybe even emulates the actual circuitry, it's still a vi...in my particular experience, I think Tempest LM-1 samps are not boring at all; they are fat and have the same kind of "flat" an original LM-1 has, especially when they flow through the Tempest signal path. I personally wouldn't describe anything that comes from an LM-1 as punchy...especially compared to the Linndrum. Somewhat subjective I realize but the reason I like working with LM-1 samps in authentically 80s style tracks is that they are indeed flat.

Yes, but I believe the LM-1 stick and the Linndrum stick were the same sample? Roger can answer this specifically.

"Drastically different" might be a little drastic :()
