Chaparral,
I think we were all referring to waveforms as it pertains to the P12. Not samples (like recorded snipbits) like you have in a traditional sampler.
I agree with you though that if I was using a sampler my use would be for the particular quality of sample itself and the enjoyment of making my own samples. I can envision sampling some string instruments that I have laying around, or some human voices, a few percussion sounds and maybe even my dog. Realistically though, I don't see myself making hundreds and hundreds of samples in my basement. So while I've always wanted to mess with a hardware sampler, I'm not so sure I can invest in a dedicated hardware sampler, or even the fine Prophet X to do that. Maybe I could test the waters with a software app, which I've considered. Anyway...this brings up a whole other topic for me- which is- do I even want to get into that realm? I cannot say never, but as of now, I have no interest in the large library Kronos, Mottiff, etc type instruments. Nor have I ever purchased or downloaded a patches for any my instruments come to think of it. So for me, I think its the satisfaction of making my own sounds and making something pretty out of that.
