Sweetwater:

P12:          2999,  Desktop 1799,  delta $1200
OB6 :        2999,   Desktop 2299, delta; $700
P6:            2799,  Desktop 2199, delta $600
REV2/8:     1499,  Desktop 1299, delta $200, not $999 ?
REV2/16:   1999 , Desktop 1799, delta $200,  not $1499 ?

Would be interested to know why there is such a huge fluctuation between the desktop and keyboard version while the electronics are  the same except the keyboard. (True the P12DT has less knobs) Waited for long for the desktop and would have placed an order today at $999. Now reconsidering the up-gradable 8 voice keyboard instead.

P.S: Is the 8 voice desktop upgrade-able  to 16 ?

They have a lot of time to change pricing, and you make a great point. I'm surprised too. But it might be they have a popular product that's selling well, and it is very aggressively priced -- that's for sure. I'm guessing they had a lot of goals with this product, and one of them might have been to be more competitive with their competition. I never owned an Oberheim or Prophet and always wanted one: this keyboard hit it out of the park for me. It's the first keyboard I bought sight unseen and have endured encoder issues, some key issues, and one returned unit. Swapped two boards -- but learned to respect their support philosophy. I still love this thing and respect DSI in a big way. Due to the aggressive pricing and perhaps great sales, they might feel like they can get a better margin on the desktop module. I really can't blame them. This wouldn't stop anyone that needs or wants a desktop module from buying one (just my two cents). I can't stress enough about how all that I just said is just a guess, with no practical knowledge of the industry.

I wonder if any of DSI's older gear or even their gear going forward will reflect on "Newer technology decreasing the price."

I wouldn't expect them to take off a whole lot more considering the price of the keyed versions. The Deepmind 12 desktop is only $100 less than the keyed version.

To really compare, just do the difference in %

Sweetwater:

P12:          2999,  Desktop 1799,  delta $1200 = -41%
OB6 :        2999,   Desktop 2299, delta; $700 = -23%
P6:            2799,  Desktop 2199, delta $600 = -21%
REV2/8:     1499,  Desktop 1299, delta $200, not $999 ? = -13%
REV2/16:   1999 , Desktop 1799, delta $200,  not $1499 ? = -10%

If you apply an aveage of 20%, the Prophet REV2/8 would have been 1199$ and the REV2/16 would have been at 1599$ anyway...Well, yes, if the margin is smaller than usual on the keys version, removing just the keyborad plus the cost of a new design to fit everything in it is a challenge and might require extra time or expenses

There are design and development costs (circuitry, mechanical), material, production  and distribution costs.

For the circuitry design there is no additional costs, unless DSI distributes some of the keyboard design cost.  For the PCB layout  would be surprised if DSI did not factor in the PCB/layout at the stage of KB development, perhaps they are even the same in the DT and KB. material is less, assembly is easier, distribution is lower cost (size/weight). Note that the REV2 KB is 5 octaves versus  4 on OB6/P6., so that must have some delta as well.

Some  reasons for $1299 for the modules could be:

[1] Position DSI as a premium brand
[2] Staying out of the red ocean with Behringer / Novation.
[3] Sufficient total demand, does not need additional desktop sales.
[4] Evaluating the demand, starting off at a higher price point

The P8 did cost less than this with "old technology". It's though still interesting to know why the P12 DT/KB difference is $1200 and the Rev2 only $200. That can't be related to the costs as mentioned.

This can be analyzed forever. Nowadays it's not about logic or if the price is reasonable, but if people are wanting to pay. Many folks won't even think a second about all this. Basic supply/demand. But the reasons above might be really frustrating for those who were really expecting to be able to get an DSI product at an entry level price point and in the end kill the reasons for or even the availability of a desktop version. (think Nord A1/4)

P.S: With the quality headaches Murphy pointed out, it perhaps its a good idea  to have a the retailer/distributor as close as to the home to handle the quality issues.

It's still  a real pity they did not make it into a 19" rack format.
