Can some Prophet 12 owners demo some Wavetable/FM/VS sounds?

I'm starting to warm up to the Prophet 12. Specifically for the FM, Wavetable, VS type tones it can get. I've heard a few demos of the FM sounds but I'd like to hear some more PPG and Prophet VS type sounds as well as classic FM/DX style stuff. Can anyone please link me to some soundcloud examples or perhaps even do some new recordings demoing these tones? It would be very much appreciated :)

Well it doesn't have the VS waveforms so you are buggered there.

The "Wavetables" in the P12 are different to the PPG stuff, as far as I know you have three waveforms, and the P12 interpolates in some way between these three waveforms rather than having a greater set of waves inside a wavetable.

The FM/DX you can get sort of close, but even with the two layers you can't get all of the structures the DX had. Also the modulation depths are different so you need to double up modulation slots to match the DX stuff and you can quickly run out of slots.

Saying that though the P12 offers a combination of features that has to make it one of the best poly synths ever, I don't think you would be disappointed in it. But if you are buying it for VS/PPG/FM use then it won't be as good as the synths that offer these as there raison d'etre but it will be better overall.

I could always be totally wrong.

I've been looking into this recently. From what I gather, a 1 to 1 knob per perameter FM synth would require much more than a subtractive synth. Such as this:

So unless you want to go that route, You might want to just DL a free FM VST plugin such as Dexed.

I found that I have to accept the synth for what it is. I don't try to see how great the analog strings are on x digital synth.  There are some synths that do strings better than others.  I experiment with the synth and find its strengths and concentrate on them  The P-12 has a lot of strengths and a huge sound palette. Learn to work within the instrument's parameters and see what great sounds you get.  I think with the P-12, you will be quite happy.

Wow!  All those beautiful knobs...but just a 4 character display  ::)

I was going to record some new demo's today, i'll do some digital/wavetable-y stuff extra.
But, like Bob said, though the P12 has linear logarythmic Fm and some modulateable wavetables, it doesn't sound like a DX7, PPG or Prophet Vs. The sound of the P12 has a lot of high-end, but not that glassy sheen that is so interesting about these glassy digital synths.

If you wan't a modern version of this, the Waldorf Blofeld is the thing imho. Versatile and cheap. It's definitely somewhere in my future-list.

On the other hand, they are all tools that can get some really interesting results with the P12 in different ways. I'll post some examples tonight.

ignore the horrible playing in this one, i was super tired & just bangin out chords & notes while moving modwheel and sliders not knowing what would happen. (most of the patches were made months ago) These sounds are supposed to be used sparsely and in context, so expect a very high cheese factor here.

here are all other recordings, some fm & digital in there but lot's more than that:

I've heard the Prophet 12 do a few patches that I really enjoyed in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj-OuzJgC18

around
0:34
0:45
0:51
1:28

A lot of these remind me of the Prophet VS tones Carpenter/Howarth used on the Big Trouble In Little China soundtrack.

I wonder if DSI/Sequential will revisit the Poly Evolver/VS waveforms in their next synth. A new Evolver might be interesting, especially if one of the digital oscillators had sampling ability or at least included some Prophet 2000 samples.

You know, if you want to get real crazy, there's always the Pro 2. It has 40 more modulation destinations, super-waves, an extra SEM inspired filter, and a sequencer. More important it has CV connectivity so you have modular options as well. Sure it only has 4 voices, but you're also working with like a grand more to spare for add ons.

... Like an Akemie's Castle FM module. If only I was cooler and had more money...

I think I shared this elsewhere on this site, and it's about 'non-traditional' FM sounds on the Prophet 12, but if you are interested - https://soundcloud.com/andy-15-3/fm-examples

I specialised with the DX7 for nearly 30 years. I would consider the ones below to be non traditional DX7 voices (a few 'windy' ones from over 250 voices that I created) and they should all be achievable on the Prophet 12 with the added benefit of loads more modulation possibilities.
