Step record

I was watching a clip on YouTube of Carson demo the prophet rev 2 in step recording he played a couple of notes in step recording and when he played it back it sounded just like he played it kinda like real time recording
He did not use any tie or rest. Can anyone help me with this. I looked at manual done google search nothing helpful.

My guess is it had something to do with a combination of Clock Divide and BPM settings, not sure what else it'd be otherwise as there's no real time record function.
