Can a sequence start with a rest or does it have to start with a note? I tried to program a sequence that started with a rest and I got an odd drone.

What OS do you have installed? There was a bug in earlier OS versions that prevented entering step one as a rest, but it was fixed a while back. I checked on the latest, 1.4.0, and was able to enter step one as a rest.
