P12 output volume way lower than my P08?
« on: April 27, 2017, 09:43:07 PM »
Hi,
I just found a "used" P12 in a store at a very good price, so, I pulled the trigger. I just installed it today with midi and audio cables but I just noticed when trying it that the output volume of the P12 is very low compared to the P08...All my set up is in our practice room and needed to leave tonight without having the time to save the issue:
Is it because I need to adjust each program volume in the VCA section? Is it because my P08 goes into a Tascam LM-8ST that has "hotter" input and output than the Art Audio MX822 which is the mixer the P12 is connected to?
I know that I will have to just switch the 1/4" jacks between them to see if it comes from the mixers but I wanted to ask to see if someone has already noticed that?
Is it because the P12 is "hybrid" compared to a truly "analog" synth like the P08.
Just let me know
Thanks
Sincerely

Hi Quai34-

Congrats on your P12 purchase! Without knowing all the intricacies of your specific setup, the volume difference you're hearing is probably correct. We have to leave more headroom for 12 voices than we do for 8 voices, because if we left it identical the additional voices and oscillators on the P12 would overload the final VCA when they are played simultaneously.

Oohhh yes, I didn't think about that, Thanks. I will test my two. I will test my 2 mixers anyway and if there is really a difference, I will return the Art and buy a second Tascam.
Thanks

I have both the P-08 and a P-12M.  The output of the P-08 is hotter, but the P-12 does have plenty of "line level" output.  If the output is low enough where noise becomes a problem then look into it further.  Otherwise, it's probably alright.

Hi,
I tested the P08 and the P12 on the same channel on the tascam LM-8ST and they sound the same volume wise...But the P12 is lowere when it goes throught my second mixer, an Art Audio MX822...It goes close to clipping at +20db to have the smae hearing volume...Then, I will return it tomorrow and order again another Tasacm, 500$ instead of 200$ but I don't want to worry all the time about clipping and so on...
