Differences Between the REV2 and the Prophet '08
« on: January 25, 2017, 08:01:00 AM »
Here is a list of the differences between the REV 2 and the Prophet ’08.  In addition to everything the P’08 has, the REV2 adds:

-   Waveshape modulation of all 4 waveforms
-   Sub octave on oscillator 1
-   Expanded modulation matrix (8 individual slots)
-   Onboard digital effects per layer: reverb, chorus, flanger, phase shifter, standard and BBD delays, ring modulation, and distortion
-   Polyphonic step sequencer per layer (in addition to the old gated step sequencer)
-   512 factory programs and 512 editable user programs (4 banks of 128 each)
-   Sixteen voice polyphony (or eight)
-   New OLED display
-   Improved keyboard
-   Integrated power supply (no "wall wart")
-   USB

                                                                                                                 ------------

-   REV2 Dimensions: 12.70″ (32.26 cm) W x 35.12″ (89.20 cm) L x 3.80″ (9.65 cm) H (2.30″ at front edge)
-   Weight: 20.5 lbs. (9.3 kg)
-   Prophet '08 Dimensions: 12.1″ (30.73 cm) W x 34.8″ (88.39 cm) L x 3.875″ (9.84 cm) H (2.25″ at front edge)
-   Weight: ~22 lbs. (9.98 kg)

Did I miss anything?

That's mostly it. All the rest comes down to the redesigned front panel and the features based on improved ergonomics:

- added glide and gilde rate/time parameters
- added HOLD button
- redesigned modulation section that allows for immediate selection of sources and destinations (press down the according button and move the parameter that should be the modulator or modulated)
- easier to select LFO shapes; also an added button
- LFO clock sync
- added tap tempo button in the clock section
- easier to operate sequencer section
- easier to select oscillator waveshapes; also an added button
- added SHAPE MOD, SUB OCTAVE, and OSC SLOP parameters
- oscillator slop based on the Prophet 12, Pro 2, Prophet-6, and OB-6
- and of course the added effects section

What's missing from the Prophet '08 front panel is/are the PROGRAM button and the VCA LEVEL parameter. The latter one is now accessible via the menu.

Also, looks like a silk screened panel instead of a big sticker.

Can anyone comment on the way splits and layers are setup on the current P08? My understanding is that to use any existing patch you must copy it to the layer. If so, it would be a nice new feature on the rev2 to ease this process. I like how the obxa, jp8000, nord leads, etc. allow you to click the other layer button and then select from your existing patches. Allow for much easier creative discovery.

In order to create a layer or split, you simply design one sound on layer A, the other sound on layer B, and then choose whether you want to combine or split on the keyboard the two layers.  Incidentally, it's also easy while playing to switch back and forth between the two layers so that one or the other is the only one in use.  This is one way of increasing your number of programs.

But this way also has a disadvantage: If You have a layered sound at a different patch, fetch one of those layers for a new patch and change it there to local requirements, the original patch is changed, too. This may not always be what You want!
After all, it comes down to the old conflict of copying vs. referencing, that not only programmers - of sounds as well as of computers in general - know about ...

... and that led to inheritance and overloading as main features of object oriented programming. IMHO this helps a bit to taylor, but does not solve the conflict in principle...
