Pro 3 / Re: Pro 3 Theremin Volume Control
« Last post by Quatschmacher on April 12, 2024, 05:12:41 AM »
Hi all, For what it’s worth. Since the Pro 3 lacks “volume” as a modulation destination, I tried modulating via CV the Envelope VCA Amount to no avail.
My ultimate solution to control volume is using a Kenton CV to Midi unit to input MIDI cc#7. Luckily there was a solution.  D
When you tried modulating VCA envelope amount did you have the envelope amount knob set to zero or to maximum? If the mod matrix CV assignment is multiplicative then you’d need to set envelope amount to maximum; if it is additive, you’d need to set envelope amount to zero.

OB-X8 / Poly After Touch and OB-X8
« Last post by Analog Prophet on April 12, 2024, 01:19:03 AM »
Bought an Korg Keystage 61 (but returned as MIDI 2.0 didn’t worked out at expected and the keys were not good) that has a Poly Aftertouch and MPE keyboard. OB-X8 receive external Poly Aftertouch and it worked out at once without any problems.

I thought I would use Poly AT for everything, but it wasn’t the case - it works for some few sounds but not the majority of sounds I use.

The next MIDI controller I will buy will be with Poly AT (still there are only some few around but I’m sure it will be more common for new models) as the OX-X8 receives Poly AT. If Poly AT can be set per patch at the controller it would make everything smoother.

Matt Johnson gigs with a P6 (as week as a Montage 6 and a Vintage Vibe 64) and covers loads of territory with it.

I've thought about this from time to time, if I were gigging and could only take one of my synths which one would it be?  Probably the P6..   Not because it necessarily is the best sounding keyboard I own (although its certainly a top pick), but because of the specific combination of the factors above.  It's a great board for my use (studio) but it also has this "stage personality" where it sort of begs to be taken out and gigged.

I know where you’re coming from. I too have a studio-only P6 and have often thought that it would be a great synth to gig with. Great sound, light and very simple to program. In fact, if I could, out of all the instruments that I have, I’d take it with me when I move along to synth heaven. :)

Hi, I figure this would be as good as a place as any to post since Dave Smith is considered the father of MIDI.

Ive made a thing I'm calling MIDI Goblin.

It's a small, device with a little oled screen that allows users to save patches for user defined devices....meaning it can save patches for any synth that can transmit midi cc/nrpn messeges. Kind of like a really flexable hardware patch librarian.

You can also use it to name patches saved on your patch banks, then load them by name in any order....I think this is one of the most important features and intentionally made a demonstration video of this feature using an OB-6(seemed appropriate)
https://youtu.be/b2mmXqm7EgM?si=TNQ3wCG8QDNTiqqN

It also has an arpeggiator function for synths that lack arpeggiators but can transmit midi note on/off messeges.
https://youtu.be/o3MECXg4egk?si=Ur0VB9gb7m4gNb11

a chord generator that automatically plays major or minor chords and if you have extra voices, you can play over top of the chord. kind of fun!
https://youtu.be/ilWWinG82Yw?si=e0Ie0PGd34oWyhWK

There's also a MIDI CC lfo, that can emulate multiple waveforms (though i think the code for the sin and tri waves needs to be re-worked...they sound very similar)
https://youtu.be/kYRZSHwCrT0?si=HpW0ADRefpC0dm-j

You can remap MIDI CC messeges. This could be really handy for old midi controllers...Also it allows you to remap your synths midi cc values so you can program one synth with another (and the MIDI Goblin can save the patch data as well)
https://youtu.be/1MoVUvOhgV8?si=aqw6_IIGvKcXENxq

It also has a scale thinger... its really fun sounding. press a note, a major or minor chord is played as an arpeggio
https://youtu.be/DGx0Gfwqn6E?si=jtxB9SAFH58b40KF

And it has a 32 step sequencer...suprisingly it was the easiest thing to program.
https://youtu.be/IesrHsNHoCQ?si=wTw4HIp9cpQi6i-v

The MIDI Goblin can be programmed using the Arduino IDE so if you want to use it for something entirely different its a pretty useful prototyping tool and I'm going to make the source code openly available too.

I think a lot of the features on the software side are handy. It does some stuff for assembling NRPN messages while filtering out message fragments that I'm pretty proud of.

Prophet on national TV.   The American Idol backing band keyboard guy has a Sequential Instrument pretty prominent in his keyboard array.  Not really sure since it looked shorter to me, but I think it was a Prophet 6.  Just an observation.

I notice the P6 on stage fairly regularly.. I'd say more often than any other analog that comes to mind.  I think there's a number of reasons for this.  Fairly compact, versatile, punchy and cuts through, very immediate to program, solidly built, etc.  Some other choices like Prophet 5/10, OBX-8 might be a bit large to gig with for some.

It kind of makes sense, as it was well known that one of Dave's favorite pass times was to go to live music events and he enjoyed seeing his creations being played on stage.  I think that fact influenced many of his designs.

VC340 strings and Prophet 5 doing the descending melody.

Pro One is the Bass.

Doepfer Dark Energy, the synth that brought me back to analogue back when, plays the ascending line. Love that synth!

TR-8S for drums.

The vocals are me trying out Melodyne as instant-harmony generator.

Samples include Laratron, Donneye and Himself.
