Hi, I figure this would be as good as a place as any to post since Dave Smith is considered the father of MIDI.

Ive made a thing I'm calling MIDI Goblin.

It's a small, device with a little oled screen that allows users to save patches for user defined devices....meaning it can save patches for any synth that can transmit midi cc/nrpn messeges. Kind of like a really flexable hardware patch librarian.

You can also use it to name patches saved on your patch banks, then load them by name in any order....I think this is one of the most important features and intentionally made a demonstration video of this feature using an OB-6(seemed appropriate)
https://youtu.be/b2mmXqm7EgM?si=TNQ3wCG8QDNTiqqN

It also has an arpeggiator function for synths that lack arpeggiators but can transmit midi note on/off messeges.
https://youtu.be/o3MECXg4egk?si=Ur0VB9gb7m4gNb11

a chord generator that automatically plays major or minor chords and if you have extra voices, you can play over top of the chord. kind of fun!
https://youtu.be/ilWWinG82Yw?si=e0Ie0PGd34oWyhWK

There's also a MIDI CC lfo, that can emulate multiple waveforms (though i think the code for the sin and tri waves needs to be re-worked...they sound very similar)
https://youtu.be/kYRZSHwCrT0?si=HpW0ADRefpC0dm-j

You can remap MIDI CC messeges. This could be really handy for old midi controllers...Also it allows you to remap your synths midi cc values so you can program one synth with another (and the MIDI Goblin can save the patch data as well)
https://youtu.be/1MoVUvOhgV8?si=aqw6_IIGvKcXENxq

It also has a scale thinger... its really fun sounding. press a note, a major or minor chord is played as an arpeggio
https://youtu.be/DGx0Gfwqn6E?si=jtxB9SAFH58b40KF

And it has a 32 step sequencer...suprisingly it was the easiest thing to program.

The MIDI Goblin can be programmed using the Arduino IDE so if you want to use it for something entirely different its a pretty useful prototyping tool and I'm going to make the source code openly available too.

I think a lot of the features on the software side are handy. It does some stuff for assembling NRPN messages while filtering out message fragments that I'm pretty proud of.

I like the idea of something that returns an arp based off the chord or notes I play on the Prophet.  How much is one of these costing?  Not sure it will be useful but that is one thing I sort of could use, an Arpeggiator that takes MIDI in, and translates it to an arpeggio, then sends that arpeggio back out to something further along.  Do you know this has always been impossible to achieve?

For instance, take the simple VST RandArp, from Code 42 ( https://codefn42.com/randarp/index.html ).  This is a great little Arpeggiator to put on a track in a program like Live Professor II in front of a VSTi, because it will take notes sent into the chain from a midi device and turn them into an arpeggio that plays the VSTi.  However, when you try to get an outputted ARPEGGIO (MIDI out) from the chain, that is being created by the VST, it is impossible to get one sent thru the MIDI out and sent to a further chain or a program with transport to record that MIDI created by the RandARP.  Believe me I have tried.  Though it was a couple years ago.  As far as that time, there was never any way to record the MIDI from the RANDARP VST.

I'm not sure I use the 5 Pin MIDI in/out ports from the prophet actually or thru.  I used to use them but maybe not anymore.  Might just be a useful device.

Thanks for your info, Kris.

Actually, this old thread seems to indicate that it should work just normally via sysex:

so my suggestion above should work. Will try next time I setup the Rev2!

I always thought that would be an artifact of the analogueness of the synth - once you change the parameters, it will immediately effect all voices. There is probably no memory for voice-specific parameters (it would  need to be 16 times multitimbral for this?). But then I know near nothing about synth design.

Because I was as annoyed by the behavior, I once wrote code for the KnobKraft Orm that would switch a patch not by sending the sysex, but rather a flood of CC/NRPN messages that would morph the one sound into the other. Of course, not much control over the order of parameters changed, but it would actually be pretty quick and would avoid the nasty note off.

If you don't transfer the sequencer data, the synth has only about 160 parameters per layer IIRC, that would be about 4k of MIDI for both layers with 12 bytes per NRPN. This can be transmitted pretty quickly even over the MIDI jacks, and sounds nice.

Now that I talk about it I need to unearth that code... https://github.com/christofmuc/KnobKraft-orm/issues/305

Many thanks for your work, Kris.

Is it possible to overwrite the factory banks with KnobKraft Orm?
Is there a manual or is it not necessary because it is self-explanatory?
I have only found the short video.

Greetings Ralf

Thanks! Actually I haven't tested it. The Rev2 has no bank dumps, each transfer into the synth addresses bank and program slot, so overwriting should either work out of the box or needs some magic trick. Have to give it a try myself.

The way you'd do it is to sync e.g. the F4 bank into the Synth Bank tab by selecting it in the tree view under "In Synth", then drag a patch into it at any place and click send to synth. It will only send changed patches back, so it would try to store a single program in the factory bank.

I don't have a better manual or video right now, for the lack of time, and I try to spend the little time I have on enhancement requests and synth adaptation, but if nobody else picks it up at some point I have to make another video or two, given the complexity of the software by now ;-)

Tetra / Re: Sound tower Tetra Editor Catalina - iOS Apps
« Last post by Larry T on April 15, 2024, 01:07:03 PM »
Unfortunety Tetra LE Free support has been discontinued.

Tetra Pro works well with latest Mac OS as well as Apple Silicon.

Plans are in in place to release a new update in the near future that will include hi DPI screens, Phantom banks and other exciting updates will be included.
Here’s a quick video to show phantom banks for the currently supported synths…

iOS applications are being updated to comply with Apple requirements.
A release date has not been set at this time. We appologize for the inconvenience.
Please check back.

Hope this helps.

In addition to stacks and splits, I think the newest firmware also added some other features, such as Q and setting an amount for Q, setting amount for velocity and aftertouch, and maybe a few other items I am forgetting. Does anyone know whether there is an editor librarian program out there that supports all these new features? I’ve heard some good things about Midi Quest. Does anyone know whether they support these features?

I would not waste money on MidiQuest. I am on the latest version 13. It's like going back to the 90's. Cumbersome, ugly, slow. I downloaded the P10 editor and it does not support stacks or splits.

Prophet Rev2 / Re: What velocity curve do you use? and What aftertouch curve?
« Last post by tomrari on April 14, 2024, 05:40:10 PM »
Just got the rev 2 as my first poly synth. I love it

Congrats!  It's an amazing sounding synth with tons of depth and versatility!

I've gone back and forth with the curves a few times, but have settled on "Curve 4" for both... provides great overall playing dynamics and I really like the feel of digging in with aftertouch... especially for playing expressive leads with pressure mapped to vibrato.

I'll try it out. Does it go from least sensitive to most sensitive?

There's some more technical information about the differences of the curves here:

Thanks i will check this out

OB-X8 / Re: Aftertouch problem?
« Last post by AlainHubert on April 14, 2024, 01:49:25 PM »
PROBLEM SOLVED

The Aftertouch software bug seems to have corrected itself!

A reminder of the initial problem I was having: Controlling the modulation from the Aftertouch was not smooth and the maximum amount of it did not work when setting the Aftertouch Amount setting in page 2.

After I played my OB-X8 from another MIDI keyboard with Aftertouch and using it, it now works as expected and much more smoothly from the OB-X8's own keyboard. And the maximum amount of it can be controlled from the Page 2 Aftertouch Amount correctly now.

I don't know why the OB-X8 needed to receive external MIDI Aftertouch messages in order to correct itself, but I'm glad it did.  ;D

Just thought I'd let everyone know.
