Title: Theft of the Sky - electronic dream rock track feat. Tempest + More
Post by: Trevor Refix on October 19, 2016, 12:04:15 PM
Hey DSI friends!

I wanted to share Theft of the Sky, the first single off of my new Texture & Light [www.textureandlight.ca (http://www.textureandlight.ca)] album Inner Space Odyssey:

https://soundcloud.com/textureandlight/02-theft-of-the-sky (https://soundcloud.com/textureandlight/02-theft-of-the-sky)

The Tempest is on percussion and lead synth duties. There's also a Rytm doing some of the drums and a Pro 2 is doing the bass.

This track was inspired by Naomi Klein's book "This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate"

I am curious about the use of the Rythm. Do you find it fills sonic holes that the Tempest doesnt quite get? Obviously it expands voice count. The biggest question is workflow.  I am trying to develope a decent workflow between my OT and Tempest. A 4 bar limit on the OT was a hurdle that took some time for me to wrap my head around (enter the arranger). I liketo work the Tempest into 8 bar beats with a couple of "fills" for beats. Organising a track between the two devices hurts my head;) I find myself just taking the Tempest and banging away. It is just too much fun. I wish I could have a DSI desktop production workstation that combinds all their products;)

The Rytm is in my band mates set up so I actually don't use it at all. I use an OT / Tempest combo but the combo is more for live use. When performing I have the mains and voice 1 of the Tempest going into the OT inputs (A/B, C) which allows me to treat the Tempest as 2 different synths on stage. Or a drum machine and a synth or whatever. The OT takes care of midi + clock for all the band machines, click, backing (if any), and set / song sequencing.

In the studio I tend to write on the Tempest and Pro 2. The OT is always being used as the midi brain for everything, but I tend not to send audio through it until the recording is stage is finished and I'm looking to spice things up or mangle them.

For this track I used the Tempest for the basic beat and then used field recordings sequenced and treated in the OT for additional percussion. My band mate added a rytm drum line somewhere along the way as well as wrote some midi drums in the DAW which we later replaced with Tempest sounds towards the end of the process.
