Title: Tempest update HELP!!!!
Post by: ianbenn on October 16, 2016, 11:36:32 AM
Has anyone had issues trying to update an earlier tempest to the latest OS?
I have just sold a tempest and the new owner emailed me with this...

"there is a major problem with this tempest. It can't be updated. The system categories cannot be accessed. Cannot upload the latest operating system on it because you can't navigate to the part of the system that you need to do it because it's not there".

I don't know if he is using mac or windows.  I understand that before version 1.2 midi ports have to be used.  I downloaded 1.4 but never installed it.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

PS would a hard reset solve issues?

I can't remember what it was but think pre 1.2
Is it possible that the os has been corrupted?

My tempest came with 1.2 and I used a m-audio uno interface and midiox on Windows 7. Though maybe the guy could try using a Mac too. Also the transmission speed can't be too fast. Certain midi interfaces won't work. Isn't there a list?

He is saying this

Im a bit lost on this as it worked ok for me, but i never tried to update it as i thought it was the latest OS.  Is it possible to screw up the OS on these things, i thought they were pretty much bomb proof?

You don't need to access any "system categories" to update the Tempest: i.e. you just need to turn it on, connect it to your MIDI device, and send the SysEx file... The screen will show the transfer in progress and instruct you from there.

I don't know how he's trying to do it, but here are the instructions:

https://davesmithinstruments.zendesk.com/entries/21324764-Updating-your-OS-on-a-PC

Further installation instructions, troubleshooting suggestions, and pertinent software recommendations and warnings can also be found right here on the OS thread; presumably where he downloaded the firmware:

http://forum.davesmithinstruments.com/index.php/topic,586.0.html

And it has been noted many times that you must update using the MIDI DIN port prior to OS 1.3, as MIDI over USB is not functional on Main OS 1.2 or earlier.

At any rate, tell the guy to quit bitching, do some reading, and ask an intelligent question or two instead (wink).

Cheers!

Apparently all sorted, but no pleasing some people.....
I advertised the tempest for £1k absolutely no offers, guy says he wants to buy, turns up, plays on it for half an hour and then offers me £900, then £950 and As i was begining to lose patience altogether coughed up the £1k.
Then sh*tty emails re the operating system which he knew when he took it away hadn't been updated.
Anyway thanks for all the help notes which I used to try and help the ungrateful person!
Cheers all and keep up the good work ;D

No worries, we see a lot of buyer's remorse around these parts; you know, the "I don't know what I'm doing, so this box must be broken" types... Ya, they're everywhere.  They tend to run with the "I don't know from synthesis, therefore the Tempest can't do good kicks" crowd.

Do your homework, people; or buy a Rhythm Wolf and "Howl" (smirk).

Cheers!
