Title: Headphones - White noise hiss
Post by: Millisec on January 31, 2023, 04:50:10 PM
Hey everyone!

When connecting my headphones to the prophet rev 2, I hear a faint white noise hiss. The hiss volume stays the same from zero volume to about 2 o'clock. Past 2 o'clock, the hiss becomes louder and there is an a faint but audible high pitched sound.

Is this to be expected or do I have a faulty unit?

Version is 1.2.0
Everything is unplugged.
I have changed power outlets.
Performed recalibration and global reset.
Same behaviour on every patch.

Thanks!

Have you tried another pair of headphones to see if the same happens? Just to take that aspect out of the equation.

Hey!

I have tried a different pair of headphones. I have also changed the power cord and just updated to OS 1.2.1

Unfortunately nothing has fixed this. I did contact support, and they told me to send them a recording.

If anyone knows about this, please reply on this forum.

Thanks!

I am updating this thread for anyone that experiences or have experienced the same thing.

I have made four recordings, which I also sent to sequential support. I am attaching them here.

Two of the recordings are: Headphone out >(with a rockboard Y-cable) Audiobox USB Soundcard > Garageband

The other two: Left out > Audiobox USB Soundcard > Garageband

In two of the recordings, the REV2 is turned off and you can still hear a high pitched sound.

I have tried plugging the rev2 on the same power outlet as my computer, as well as, on a different outlet. I get the same results. None of the other synths I own do this (Minibrute 2s, Dreadbox Typhon).

I also need to say that, when plugging my headphones on the REV2, I hear the same sound as you hear on the file "Headphone out - Turned on" but without that continuous high pitch sound.

If anyone has anything on this, please reply on this thread. Thanks!

My guess is that it might be a USB-related issue. I had problems with my Prophet 6 (and also a Juno 6) when I had my studio in Berlin. Depending on what was plugged into what/where, USB connections were generating noise that the Prophet 6 was picking up. In that case, I ended up buying a cheapo international power adapter and that did the trick. In my home studio now, it's a USB-powered LED light that generates daily annoyance noise.

Hey! Thanks a lot for replying!

This might be the case about the high pitched noise (although none of my other synths do this).

I am more concerned about the large amount of noise. My other synths do not generate that much noise as the rev2!

I'm a pretty low-tech fellow, but I seem to recall when I was having USB issues, there was noise and a high pitched sound. And in my case, it was only the Prophet 6 and Juno 6 that were picking up the noise. My other synths didn't have the problem. In my case, it did turn out that based on what was plugged into which power outlet, the USB noise came and went. Certainly your issue could be coming from some source unrelated to USB, but if it turns out it is USB-related, hopefully it'll just be a matter of trouble-shooting your various connections.

Let's hope this is the case. I am still quite concerned about the substantial noise I hear when plugging my headphones.

Have you tried turning literally unplugging and turning everything else off apart from the Rev 2 and trying it that way? Do you still get the noise?

If you do still get the noise (with 2 different headphones ideally) then you have isolated the problem to the synth itself at least.

.. and if you do get the noise I would then try the same settings but through the main outs into the soundcard with the headphones plugged into the soundcard. If you no longer get the issue then you have (probably) isolated it to the Headphone out on the synth. If you still get the noise then it suggests something else within the synth itself.

I also had a hissing noise on my headphones but also on the main output. I had to have my rev2 exchanged. was a defect in the device. At that time I made a screenshot of the frequencies that caused the noise and a sound file. attached this here.

I have recorded my signal through both the main outs, and the headphone out. On both, I get about -80db of noise, which is absolutely normal for the rev2. The recordings I have attached above, prove that (there is also a high pitched sound, which I attribute to USB grounding and all this stuff).

The issue is that I am getting white noise on my headphones when plugged directly into the REV2. I have tried another pair of headphones I own, although I must they are pretty cheap.

My main pair of headphones are the Audio Technica ATH-M50X. On my other synths, they are dead quiet. Could there be a problem with the ATH-M50X and the REV2 combination? I am not familiar with the impedance stuff, so I might be doing something wrong pairing those two. Does anyone have something on this?

These are very high numbers for the noise floor and I am very happy you got another REV2. I get about -80db of noise, which is totally normal. Maybe I am doing something wrong pairing my ATH-M50X with the REV2?

All I can say is that my Rev2 doesn't rustle at all. 0 noise, whether through headphones or main outputs

First thought I get is a switched power supply of some sort in gear used.
- when getting aged in particular the efficiency of switching goes down in frequency, sometimes to audible frequencies

Second thought some lightbulb fluoroscent kind or something. Some gear from builders around in neighbourhood the generate something on power grid.

I get a little tick when electrical fences for cattle is on in neighbourhood. Mostly taken up by guitar pickups, but sometimes there in synths too. But just a tick every second or so at -60 dB or so.

I tried switching rooms and the problem persists.

Before getting a power conditioner, I might visit a friend's house or something.

On the meantime, if anyone also experiences this, please let us know.

Have you contacted the Sequential support team with this? I would do that first and foremost, and send them your recordings too, before buying extra stuff. Problem could be the synth itself.

I have contacted support and sent them my recordings. The recordings do not indicate anything wrong with the REV2. However I still get white noise on my headphones when plugging directly into the REV2. I use the ATH-M50X and I don't get this stuff in any of my other synths, except if turn the volume to the max.

As of right now, support's advice is powering the rev in a friend's house.
